    Yep, in addition to possible tubing, the calendar trip this week is a Maungahuka loop.   • Alpha hut

    Alpha Hut, a large hut on the famous Southern Crossing route.  A welcome sight after the climb from Hells Saddle or dropping from the summit of Alpha. Sleeps: at least 24 on bench bunks. Heating: A potbelly - finding dry firewood is a real problem.  Tent space: Not really.

    Andersons Memorial hut.  Situated at the bush egde on the main range just below Junction Knob. Sleeps: 6 on comfortable wooden bunks. Heating: A new potbelly. Camping: Some tops camping nearby (can be swampy and lots of long tussock).
