  • Mcgregor Biv

    A superb biv, located at the bush edge on Mcgregor spur, a visit normally means you are en route to or from the wonderful mid-upper reaches of the Waiohine. Sleeps: Two (low bunk plus floor) heating: No. Camping: You could camp on Mcgregor spur next to the tarn directly above the biv.

  • Mid King Biv

    A superb and little visited biv, nestled inside the bush on the eastern slopes of Mid King.  It can be difficult to find. Sleeps: two to three (no bunks, but three on the floor is a squeeze). Heating: No. Camping: Limited but possible outside the biv.

  • Mid Waiohine Hut

    Mid Y is located in the Waiohine river between Mt Holdsworth (Isobelle) and Aokaparangi.  Unfortunately its nearly 1000m up or down either. Sleeps: Six Heating: Smoky open fire. Camping: yes on the helipad by the river.

  • Mitre Flats Hut

    A popular hut on the Waingawa river and the best access point for climbing Mitre (1571m) the highest bump in the Tararuas. Sleeps: 20 or so on bench bunks, but lots of floor and deck space probably nearly doubles it. Heating: Potbelly. Camping: Copious.

  • Tarn Ridge Hut

    A superb Tararua tops spot, nestled on the Waingawa side of Tarn Ridge.  In fine weather it has commanding views. Sleeps: 12 or so on bench bunks. Heating: A potbelly that doesn't often have fuel (as you can see wood is not plentiful). Camping: Tops camping.

  • Nichols Hut

    Located off the main range below Nichols Peak, this hut offers superb views down the Waiohine river in good weather. Sleeps: 12 or so on bench bunks. Heating: Potbelly. Camping: Limited and in the scrub zone.

  • North Mangahao Biv

    Accessed via private land in the Northern Tararuas. Many peoples last Tararua hut visited. Sleeps: Two Heating: No Camping: Limited.

  • Parawai Lodge

    A roadend hut at Otaki Forks. Sleeps: 12 or so on bench bunks. Heating: Potbelly. Camping: Copious, and unlimited if you cross the bridge.

  • Powell Hut

    The latest version of the popular Powell Hut, located at the bush edge on Mt Holdsworth. Sleeps: 40 plus. Heating: Gas heaters. Camping: Not near the hut, you would have to go up the ridge towards Holdsworth.

  • Renata Hut

    Located on Renata Ridge not far from Maymorn Junction. Sleeps: Around eight on one platform. Heating: Open fire. Camping: No.  Renata Peak is worth camping on though for views similar to Elder hut.
