  • Wonderful weekly update

    Hola everyone!

Hope you all had horribly exciting holidays (or a fun two weeks working!) There's a whole host of exciting stuff going on so plenty of excues for some quality assignment procrastination!!

-we're heading up into the Ruahines for some quality tramping this weekend. Kieran and Alyn have been conjuring up some exciting destinations, so drop me an email if you want to sign up or know more!

-a dazzling daytrip is being run to a mystery destination for those not able to commit to such solid procrastination! I'm organising this one too and was thinking of Belmont Regional Park as there's some pretty cool views and it's really close to the city but am pretty open to ideas so let me know if you want to come and have a better idea!

-after (hopefully) getting all inspired in all things conversation-y volunteering at Mana Island the other weekend, we have a trip to Kapiti Island next weekend. Kapiti's an awesome place bursting with birds you don't see on the mainland, like weka and takahe so a really cool place to visit. Sarah's organising this so drop her an email if you want to know more. We have to book by the end of the week and it's generally a pretty popular trip so make sure you get in quick! She'll have a sign up sheet tomorrow night too.

-meetings are back in the Student Union Building. We're in the Memorial theatre this week and will be doing some conservation-themed stuff. Nicolai's landscape photography workshop (where we can learn some secrets into his amazing photos) will be next week back in Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.

With all these exciting things going on, there's no excuse to be doing assignments so come get into the hills (or over to islands) (or even just to the Student Union Building) with us!

  • Another weekly update... But exciting news! - caution contains excitement

    Hello all,

This is the weekly up date savagely delivered to you by me this week.

So what is the haps you may ask?  There has been a lot going on, including a fantastic Easter tramping trip to the Kaweka’s with Tequlia sunrises and hot pools.  There was a great trip to Somes island in the weekend just been, followed by birthday cocktails for Jess - maybe too many.  All an all it has been exciting.

But wait there is more, in fact so much more it is hard to comprehend let alone eat in one meal.  Yes it is here! This weekend! The monumental VUWTC Gourmet tramping trip.  This would be on the calendar under the section of unmissable events and is a whole load of fun.  See Gourmet trip for details. So if you are interested (which you should be!) Come along on Tuesday to sign up or email the trip organiser

This week we are meeting Tuesday 8:00 pm on the second floor of the Hotel Bristol, Cuba mall.  But next week it is back to normal with meetings back up at uni.

Hope everyone has a fantastic week

    Craig Scott

    Have some splendid holidays!
  • Weekly Update

Hey Hey All! Last weekend will be a hard act to follow J (note the sun, climbing, bbq, and decidedly awesome party) but here’s what’s in the works this week.

Meeting: this week's meeting has lots planned, so dont miss out! A brief run-through of the website for those of us technically challenged, some practise with cool equipment (from our newly organized gear shed!) and information on this week's club trip as well as upcoming and holiday events.

Tramping: Bushcraft is this weekend! This is a great tramp where we wander the  beautiful Tararuas while learning all sorts of fun and useful skills such as navigating (i.e. away from a pot of bowl-bending vegetarian food), river-crossing (i.e. what to do when swing bridges get boring) and general safety practices (like how to avoid crazy trip leaders). This year should be especially great as there are rumors that the easter bunny has taken up residence somewhere around otaki forks. Come along to the Tuesday meeting for more information and to sign up or see BUSHCRAFT, or if unable to come, e-mail the trip leader.

Climbing: Despite appearances, the tramping club does not encourage people to drop out of uni or work to become a full-time rock-head. Those ropes are expensive.

Tuesday night bouldering in the rec center long-room, 5:30 till 7.

Wednesday night climbing at Fergs, from 5:00.

Thursday night canyoning in the hutt, contact our climbing officer for more details.

Enjoy! And remember to write up a trip report if you went to rockcraft or the party, bribes to be had at tuesday's meeting! Pictures would also be great- throw them up on the website if you're able.
  • What's up this weekend

Hola everyone, hope you had an excellent weekend! Once again we have some exciting adventures planned for this weekend, namely:

-Rockcraft I out to Baring Head this Saturday. This is a great chance to learn some new skills (or show off already awesome ones) in a neat spot round the other side of the harbour. If you want to have a practice before heading out there, don't forget there's bouldering in the longroom at the Rec Centre on Tuesdays at 5.30 and people head down to Ferg's on Wednesdays after work/uni. For more info on anything climbing-related, drop Ollie an email on tuohyoliv@student.vuw.ac.nz or and look at Rockcraft I

-The first official tramping club party of the year this Saturday night. It will be fantastic!! For more details see  PARTY!!!! It will be an excellent evening of antics and a great way to get to know people in the club (and have stories to use against them in the future!)

    Have a wonderful week!

  • Mr Ryburn and the student trekkers make it into the Herald

Trampers, farmers in step over report

    5:00AM Thursday March 08, 2007
By Paula Oliver  and Mike Houlahan

    Original article in the herald

Farmers and tramping groups marched in step yesterday, praising the walking access report for endorsing a negotiated approach for people wanting to enjoy the great outdoors.

Federated Farmers were pleased the panel ditched "right to roam", instead favouring an access commission to negotiate agreed routes for trampers across public land.

Federated Mountain Clubs said such a commission would ensure public access to publicly owned land.

"The panel's proposals are well thought out and achievable," Federated Mountain Clubs president Brian Stephenson said.

"We are delighted with the outcome, and we think the whole thing is good news for everyone."

Trampers and farmers had previously been at loggerheads over using farm tracks to get to scenic locations. Most clubs arrange use of private land before trips, and Federated Farmers spokesman Bruce McNab said most farmers welcomed visitors.

Craig Ryburn, chief guide with the Victoria University Tramping Club, said student trekkers generally encountered few access problems, but in some places getting to tracks was becoming an issue.

"It is something that needs to be looked at because it is getting worse."

Mr Ryburn had had few problems with farmers, although on one tramp in the Ruahine ranges a farmer had used a chainsaw to fell poles meant to mark an access route.

"I think it's a minority of people, who are more naive to the situation than anything, who tend to spoil it," Mr Ryburn said.

"I can sometimes see the farmer's point of view, but at others times I can't see the issue with five or six people wandering across their land to get access into somewhere. Most people who go through aren't going to cause damage to fences and will leave the gates as they found them."

Hugh Barr, secretary of the council of outdoor recreation associations, said in the short term nothing would change for trampers, but in the long-term, maps showing access to public land should be more readily available.

He hoped the panel's proposals could mean better access for trampers to beauty spots, especially to forest parks and some coastal tracks.

"With a public access commissioner there's a chance he may actually get around and chat to people and see if there isn't some room for movement in these sorts of things," Mr Barr said.

"In significant places where public access is blocked at present, then negotiations might be able to come up with better compromises than we have."

    Dissent over public access

A member of the independent panel which examined land access issues has broken away from its recommendations - saying they do not go far enough.

Bryce Johnson, an advocate for anglers and outdoor recreationists, said: "It [the access commission] cannot negotiate from a position of strength and cannot guarantee an outcome when other parties refuse to negotiate."

Mr Johnson said yesterday he had filed a minority view to the panel's final report and pointed out that he was the only member of the panel with an outdoor recreation advocacy background and all the other members had identified "rural" connections.

People wanted a "champion" for public access and so the agency should have the authority to pro-actively initiate and settle, and determine new and "lost" access rights.

Mr Johnson urged the Government to address situations where landowners "unreasonably" retained rights of veto over public access.

  • Rogaine success for VUWTC

The NZ rogaine champs - The Peggioh Merry-Go-Round - was held in Marlborough on the weekend, in the dry barren hills between the Flaxbourne and Waima rivers.  There were lots of ex-vuwtc members taking part, and three current members (some of whom did quite well!) in the 24hr dash to navigate to as many points as possible.

Hazel Bidmead and her Dad Ross planned well and delivered a quality, measured rogaine performance to finish 7th overall, they were also the 4th Mixed team and the 1st family team home.  Richard Davies and Ben Clendon staggered round the course like a couple of drunken hobos (yes, thats hobos with a b....) and managed to pick up 14th place overall (the 7th mens team home).  Hannah Mcgregor and her teammate Brenda only had one proper rogaine between them but handled the bucolic charms of the course with ease [only if ease means suffering and death - see trip report] and picked up 20th place overall and won the trophy as the top female team.

For those who are curious, top athletes Richard Ussher and Nathan Fa'avae won from other top athletes George Christison and Chris Morrissey.

Full results for trainspotters are here

For information on rogaining go here

Keep an eye on the forums here for information about this excellent sport which is to tramping what 20/20 is to test cricket.  There is a lot going on in Wellington in the next few months and it's a great way to get into it, most events aren't 24hours!

  • First Meeting and First Tramp of the year!

Our first meeting is taking place tonight, Tuesday 6th of March, starting at 7.30pm in Meeting rooms 1&2 of the Student Union Building.  Come along to find out more about the club and the first tramp of the year - Freshers.

Freshers is our first trip of the university year and it is an absolutely fantastic trip!  The trip is on the weekend of 10th/11th of March (this weekend!).  Freshers is going away to the wonderful Totara flats in the Tararua forest park.  There will be fun, swimming and even a BBQ at the end.  It's a great opportunity to get to know people and get a taste for what the club has to offer.  So come along tonight and sign up. See here for more details.

  • Missing trampers reunited with modern communications

Two trampers not heard from for 8 days in the rugged South Westland bush were spotted yesterday in the Fantail Cafe in Haast avoiding Sheryl's "Crassints with chips".  Questioned by DOC Haast as to their distressed appearance it appears they had not been near a telephone, email or cricket news for at least a week due to Telecom's abuse of its monopoly position in regards to Red Mountain broadband facilities.  Trusty mountain radio technology also failed, and further government regulation of the mountain radio service is now expected to be announced. Thankfully, inane communications have now been restored.  An unnamed source in Kumara was quoted as saying "I think they should've sent a helicopter into some of those huts to check whether or not they were there.  I have a list of good places to check."
