  • First Meeting this Tuesday and Freshers!

    Hey everyone!

Our first official meeting of the year is coming up this Tuesday (4 March) at 7.30pm in Meeting Rooms 1 & 2 of the Student Union Building, Victoria University, Kelburn Campus.

This is a great chance to come along and find out what we do, when, where and how! We'll give a slideshow, introduce a few people and provide info on how to join, sign up for trips and what gear you need.

Also you'll be able to sign up for our first trip of the year, 'Freshers'! This is a fun, relatively easy (and definetely social) tramp for those new to the club to come along, meet some people and get out into the nz outdoors!

It runs Friday night to Sunday of next weekend (7-9 March) in the Tararaus (Totara Flats) and is a great introduction to tramping and the club. More info at the meeting!

    See you there!

    Kieran
    President

  • Last chance to drink beer!

Well, not really but just a quick note to remind you all that our last informal meeting of the summer is tomorrow (Tuesday) from around 8pm at the Welsh Dragon Bar, end of courtney place. So everyone come along and drink some beer!

Also come along to find out whats happening on the weekend (rumours of a Waikanae party and tubing), sign up for standing on the stalls at clubs days (this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and... drink more beer! It is summer after all :)

Next week we'll be back up at uni, more details on this to follow shortly!

  • Meeting on Tuesday from 8pm (Welsh Bar)

    Hey guys,

Just to let you know that the meeting on Tuesday will be from 8pm, mainly to allow the committee to discuss and organise the start of the tramping year!

Its a busy time of year for us, so if you're new to the club please be patient while we sort ourselves out - we'll be meeting up at uni from 4 March and will be taking membership, having regular trips and doing more than just beer drinking at the meetings on Tuesdays (though we'll be doing that as well)!

If you're not new (or if you are and are exceptionally keen) there's lots of things you can do to help out the club at this time:

    Clubs days

This is where we get to promote the club to all the students milling round with nothing to do in the first week of lectures! So need lots of volunteers (ie all you students out there) to man the stalls, setup, take membership, etc.

They're on 27th, 28th (at Kelburn campus) and 29th (Pipitea) of February from 10am - 2pm. Thats Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week so if you can help out any of those times let Sarah know (milsa689@xtra.co.nz).

    Postering

Another aspect of publicity is sticking up posters - at the various uni campuses, your workplace, flat, hostel or whereever. We'll let you know when these are ready.

    Calendar

Any last minute suggestions for official tramps or other activities for the tramping year can be forwarded to Alyn (Alyn.Higgins@hanz.org.nz) or posted here.

    Freshers

We'll need lots of leaders for the first trip of the year - a good chance to get into leading and organising a group, as its a nice easy, laidback social trip with lots of people round. You don't have to do much, just make sure your group turns up, sort out a dinner and follow the horde!

Its on the weekend of 8-9 March, so let Alyn know if you're interested.

    Cheers thats all for now,

  • Tramping club meeting

Hello all and welcome to 2008, a new and exciting year and tramping and adventure is ahead of us!!  The club meetings will be from 7:30pm every Tuesday at the Welsh Dragon Bar on Kent / Cambridge terrace (near the embassy theatre on the island in the middle of the road) until uni starts.  So come along, enjoy a beer or 10, catch up on the gossip, find out about up coming trips or plan adventures.

    See you there

  • Meeting this Tuesday - Dessert Night at Alyn and Bernie's!!

    Hey guys,

The powers that be have decided that the last meeting of the year should be a xmasy dessert night! So everyone come along this Tuesday to Alyn and Bernie's at 20 Zetland Street, Highbury from 7pm.

Bring along those christmas puds, mince tarts, pavs and strawberries - plus anything else you can think of, not to mention a few drinks! Mulled wine and brandy would go down a treat!

    See you all there!

    Kieran

  • Meeting this Tuesday at the Hangi!

    Hey guys,

Just a reminder that we won't be meeting at the pub this week, but will instead be feasting and drinking (and soaking in hot pools) at the hangi! See Craig's previous post for more details and remember to bring some money for him ($10)!

The following week we'll be back at the Welsh Dragon Bar and after that it'll be Christmas! Then New Years! So we'll probably commence meetings again in January after all that exceitement :)

Hope everyone had a great weekend, the tubing was excellent fun (see photos) and there might be a keen daytrip this weekend (with less keen options too of course!). People keep mentioning this Carkeek picnic thing...

    Catch you all tomorrow!

  • Hangi!

    Hey Guys,

Here are some further details about the hangi:

When? Tuesday 11th, turn up whenever (there will be people there all day), food served approx 7pm. Reserve Day Wed 12th.

What the? It's a hangi, in the bush, with a heated 10ft pool, stereo and lights.

What do you need? Beverage (preferably cans), koha of $10 to cover food, generator hire etc., $5 if you aren't eating (Pay to Craig R so he doesn't go broke!), torch and pool atire. Please note the hangi is an equal opportunity event. Therefore males are encouraged to wear bikinis (and the females are welcome to not wear bikinis...). You are also welcome to stay down at the hangi site - either bring a tent or just pass out in the bushes.

What do you need to do? Turn up! But it would be good if you could email me to give me a vauge idea of numbers. Also if you email me a cell no. I will text you if it is postponed.

Where: Sam's Gully in the Makara peak mountain bike park, a 10 - 15 min walk from the road end. Go to the St Albans Ave Rd end and walk up the 4WD track. Where the road forks go right, take next bike track on the left and then when you meet interesction go left again. When you reach a rough looking track with a sign (partly obscured) 'Private Property' follow the track down. It is slightly rough (we have tried to clear it a bit), so not advisable in high heels! See maps below:

St Map to St Albans Ave

Map to Hangi site in Makara peak mountain bike park:

Any questions, email me or send me a text. Please note there is no cell reception at the site, so you proably won't get a response on Tuesday night.

  • Meeting at the Welsh Dragon Bar again, plus lots of exciting summer activities to come!

    Hey all,

The meeting this Tuesday will be at the Welsh Dragon Bar again from 8pm (middle of the road at the end of Courtney Place).

It seems like everyone I talked to thought it was a pretty good place to hang out so I reckon we'll stick with it for our weekly meetings over summer. So come along on Tuesdays for a few beers, a catch up and to sign up for upcoming trips!

Our chief guides Alyn and Andrea have come up with an action packed summer calendar (which will be posted here in full soon) including climbing, tramping, tubing, lying on beaches and of course partying! If your keen for something I'd highly suggest coming along to a Tuesday meeting or contacting the trip organiser early to express interest and help make the trip happen!

This weekend there's plans to go visit an old aircraft wreck off the Holdsworth Jumbo loop in the good old Tararua ranges - sign up tomorrow night or email Sarah if you can't make it.

    See yous tomorrow night!

  • Gear crack down

Hey guys the club is exceptionally good at lending gear to people but it has come time for us to get our gear shed in order and get all of the gear back for the end of the year.  So clean out your bedrooms and garages we want all club gear back and there will be no exceptions.  All gear is to be back by the 23rd of November. .If any gear is returned after the 23rd we will ask for a $5 donation that will go towards gear maintenance.

Can I ask people to keep an ear out to who has what gear and let me know so that I can make a list to get them to bring it back or I can collect it off them

If there are any questions please let me know.

  • Welsh Dragon Bar this Tuesday!

    Hey people,

This weeks tramping club meeting will be at the Welsh Dragon Bar from 8pm on Tuesday. Its at the Mt Vic end of Courtney Place, in the middle of the road (Kent/Cambridge Terrace) near the embassy.

Its a nice looking pub with friendly staff, fairly cheap beer ($6 pints) and won't close on us like B4 last week! They have bar snacks like chips, garlic bread but in future could do us meals and potentially cheaper drinks depending on numbers and whether we like it. So come along and have a few drinks!

  • Meeting this Tuesday at B4 from 7pm

    Hey guys,

Just a quick note that the meeting this Tuesday will be at B4 (ground floor of McKenzies Unicomm Hostel, upper Willis St) from 7pm. They would usually close at this time so make sure at least some you turn up then and make the most of the cheap drinks!

Unfortunately B4 will close for renovations in a couple of weeks, so let me know if you've got any ideas for meeting places over summer - ideally a friendly pub, not to busy with nice (and cheap) food and drink...

  • The once a year club dinner!!! Don't miss out!

    Hello Everyone

This Tuesday night (16 October) we are having our once a year fantastic event, Our annual Last Supper club dinner where we descend on some unsuspecting, but nevertheless reputable, establishment to consume fine food and wine.

Don’t be fooled by the name “Last Supper” it is really our one and only supper of the year so it is more like “First Last and only Supper”.  Maybe for the reason that there are would not be enough establishments in Wellington if we were to do this more than once a year.  So rest assured the tramping club is still moving along at a blistering pace with many things coming up including labour weekend fun and a summer calendar due out shortly.

This year the arrangement is a set menu option at Roti on Willis street, a small Indian and Malaysian restaurant opposite the Willis st village upper Willis street.

The plan is to meet there at 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

So the deal is a selection of entrees to start to share, including vege options, followed by a selection of main courses to also share with rice and homemade rotis for the set price of $23 per person. BYO wine, although there may be a small corkage charge. Sounds like a deal to me.

Please let Alyn know if you are going to attend see his post

    See you all there

  • Free Pizza!

Now that I have your attention, the AGM is being held tonight, Tuesday October 9th, from 7.30 in the usual place (SUB Meeting Rooms 1&2) and there will be Pizza available from 7pm.  This is your chance to vote (and stand) for positions on the VUWTC committee for 2008 and get a free feed.  So don’t miss out.

See Annabel’s post below for details on committee positions.

    Cheers,

    Hazel J

  • Heels!

    Hello everyone,

As you all know the end of the year is fast approaching and that means that it’s time for Heels – our annual publication.  So far we have a collection of reports about various tramps, but there are some major holes and we need your help to fill them!  If you could write a trip report, poem, abstract thoughts or just plain ramblings about AIC, Freshers, snow caving, mid winter Christmas, Mid Winter, a trip to the Tararuas, a late night climb or caving adventure or a trip to the Ruahines then I’d love to hear from you.  Your contribution doesn’t have to be a multi-page epic, and it doesn’t have to cover the whole trip, it just has to be sent to me or Jess by Wednesday October 10th.

And don’t forget that there are still chocolate bribes on offer!  So don’t delay, start writing today!

  • Tramping club going ons and the AGM

Hey all! Hope you had a merry weekend and your calves aren't as achy as mine after too many Taranaki staircases!! If you're keen for the hills, I'm organising a Kapakapanui tramp this weekend and we've got our leadership weekend next weekend which is going to be mean!! Anyway come have a chat to me tomorrow night to find out more.... Speaking of which, it's our last proper meeting of the year (except for the AGM of course) and am planning on doing a quiz night so think bringing along a few drinks wouldn't go amiss...

Anyway here's a massive spiel about the AGM...

Right well the Tramping Club AGM is going down next Tuesday night where we elect the 2008 committee. Being involved with the committee is an awesome way of getting involved with the club more, looks great on your CV and can be pretty rewarding. There are 14 positions, with large variation in time/enthusiasm commitments so if you’re around next year, we’re always very keen for new energy and ideas!!

I’ve asked all the current committee to email me in a description of what their role involves, so have a read through and check out the stuff you might be interested in (and think of any other people you could nominate for each role!!) And think outside the square- you may end up doing something entirely different from what you had envisaged!! If you want to know anymore about a position, drop me or the person an email or have a chat to them tomorrow night.

And just a note, I didn’t provide any guidance to people as to what to write, so it’s all pretty different formats. A few people sent me in ideas as well as to how the role could work better next year which I’ll forward onto the elected person. And some people didn’t send me in anything so some of it is a bit Annabel-ised!!

    President

Being President has been a lot of work but also a lot of fun this year! Your big duties are basically to oversee everything going on and organise the Tuesday night meetings. The amount of stuff you actually do depends on how much energy you’re willing to put into it and how good you are at delegating!!

I guess some of the other stuff I’ve had a lot to do with this year (I forget heaps of it but there’s tonnes of other stuff!!) is doing grant applications, updating the website, ordering t-shirts and liaising with lots of people emailing you everything from what sleeping bag to buy to advertising free alpine courses. There’s heaps of potential to get involved in way more things or to delegate it all out and not let it take over your life quite so much!
I guess the key thing with being President is you need to be really keen about everything and friendly as everyone knows who you are and new people want to talk to you even when you’re frantically trying to sort out mountains of things! But it’s an awesome chance to get really involved in tonnes of tramping-related stuff!

Chief Guide and Assistant Chief Guide

Craig didn’t send me in anything, but Andrea’s description of Assistant Chief Guide sums up quite a bit of it. I guess being Chief Guide means you need to be prepared to be responsible for what goes on during club trips and ensure there’s heaps of stuff going on. It’s a huge time/energy commitment but means you’re involved in a lot of cool stuff!! Anyway…

So what I actually do is help out the Chief Guide with all the things they have to do. This allows the load to be shared between 2 people, as there is quite a lot that the Chief Guide is responsible for, and it tends to get shared out evenly or unevenly depending on the time each person can/wants to put in...
Things like the Calendar have to be worked out proir to uni starting again, and there is always lots of organisation involved in running the big trips, like Freshers, AIC, and Midwinter. Helping out with those trips mainly involves making sure transport and accommodation is booked, and that group routes get worked out (with enough bail out options), making sure people sign up, working out groups, and anything else that comes up about the trip. We also have to assign leaders to trips and make sure they know when they are meant to be organising something. We basically just make sure as many trips as possible get going, and that people know what to expect from them.

    Secretary

The position of Secretary is a constitutional position along with the President, Chief Guide and Treasurer. The role of the Secretary is to collate and administer the Club membership with the Club Treasurer. The secretary also assists the Club President with Club management matters and general communication with the public and Club members as necessary. The secretary is also responsible for:

    • Making room bookings for Club meetings and liaising with university administration on this,
    • Preparing and maintaining a spreadsheet with Club members and their contact details
    • Clearing and distributing Club mail
    • Keeping minutes of Committee meetings as well as the Club's Annual General meeting.
    • Assisting with the Club's affiliation to VUWSA
    • Assisting with Club grant applications for Club equipment, and
    • Liaising with Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand on the Club's affiliation

    Treasurer and Co-Treasurer

    Role: Deals with club finances
    - Requires coming to each meeting with the cash box and being ambushed by people wanting to part with their money! Each payment is recorded by receipt for future reference. Each new member must fill out a membership slip (which is kept by the secretary) and is given an event calandar/club info sheet, membership and FMC card.
    - The role also involves regular banking and writing cheques to pay for invoices or reimburse people for petrol (requires a receipt as proof of payment amount). At the end of the year a tally is done to determine the financial health of the club and a budget is made.

Gear Custodian (there are two of these)

    From Kieran:

    Key duties and responsibilities:
     - help organise, issue and return gear for club trips
     - maintain the club gear and keep the gear shed tidy!
     - advise on gear purchases for grant applications, get quotes, etc
So good if you live/work close to uni, have an interest in gear, etc.
Probably also good if at least one knows a bit about climbing/alpine
    stuff.

    From Craig:

    Gear Custodian: fondles gear

Publicity Officer (there are two of these too)

    Duties:

    1)     To advertise the first meeting at the beginning of each term

    2)     To be present at clubs days and as many meetings as possible in order to encourage new members.

    3)     To keep a low level of advertising going throughout the year

    a.     Salient

    b.     Posters of events, such as bush-ball

    c.      Online weekly update

    4)     To encourage trip report writing and collate them into a yearly publication; Heels.

    Social Convenor

This role doesn't require a huge time commitment but you need to be enthusiastic about tramping, climbing, the mountains, drinking, Double Brown and anything else that comes along! Your key events to organise are the tramping club party early in the year and Bushball around May, other than that its great (if you don't have a thesis) to try and organise other random social events during the year to keep people’s livers in line and generally just be willing to go that extra mile on club trips by always having a substantial amount of your select beverage on hand (Double Brown is strongly recommended). Also helps if you’re willing to run a few of the meeting nights with some crazy events to inspire people too. Basically for this role, whether you climb or tramp or just indulge in drinking, you need to be cheerful, enthusiastic, willing to rally people for events and help people have a good time. This may result in you also getting horribly intoxicated but unfortunately this is one of the risks the gallant individual who takes this role on will have to deal with.....very brave!

Note: There is a distinct possibility you could take on this role without having touched an alcoholic drink in your life, maybe? I can offer no opinion as to how taxing it would be to do this though, or whether you would survive the year.

    Conservation Officer

The Conservation Officer is responsible for organising the conservation side of the club.  This usually includes day trips to Kapiti Island, Mana Island, Matiu/Somes Island and Karori Wildlife Sancturary.  There is also the opportunity to develop the conservation side of the club further.  It could be useful to get in touch with the campus conservation group Gecko, who have some interesting trips going too.

Kapiti Island is a nature reserve, where all predators, such as rats, mice and possums have been removed.  This means it is a place where many native birds and plants can thrive.  It’s really worth a trip, the bird life is amazing, we even had Kaka landing on peoples’ shoulders.  There are Takahe there also.

Mana Island is also free from predators, but has not been for that long.  Much of the island is still covered in grass.  They run tree planting weekends to help re-establish the native bush on the island.  There are also Takehe on this island, and stone Fluttering Shearwaters, built to try and attract a colony.

Somes/Matiu Island is another island reserve, with a lot of work going.

    Huts Maintenance Officer

My role on the committee is the Huts Officer, and this entails attending two meetings one in August the other on March I think. The meeting is the TARHC -Tararua Aorangi Ruahine Huts Committee, who are made up of DoC reps and reps from other tramping clubs in the areas adjacent to the above ranges. The main function is to maintain and coordinate the management on the Hut network in the areas above. Not a great amount of work, but could be combined with conservation officer duties, as together, both roles involve a bit of work with DoC.

    Climbing Officer

    Climbing officer
    -to drag others out climbing!
-teach basic rock skills – anchor set up, lead climbing/belaying,
    climbing technique, ethics
-inspect club climbing gear (especially ropes)
-advise on what climbing gear the club needs to purchase next
-all other silly activities involving ropes!
