Carkeek after its interior and exterior paint job in 2004. Dry wood can be a problem up in the mist at Carkeek, please fill the wood bin before leaving, good wood can be found if you walk more than 2 mins from the hut.

Heating: Wood burner but note comment about wood.
Camping: Limited, but we did get 18 people here one ...

A frosty June morning at a (then) freshly painted Kime Hut. Situated on the 'Southern Crossing' between Bridge peak and Field Peak.

New Waiopehu built in 2002 is a comfortable modern facility, but with increased visitor numbers the track up Waiopehu Ridge has become very muddy. Located near the bushedge on Waiopehu.
Sleeps: Around twenty.
Heating: No.
Camping: Limited and uncomfortable.

Penn Creek after its internal recladding and an exterior paint job - great work thanks DoC! Situated in the Penn catchment between the Southern Crossing and Pakihore ridge.
Sleeps: Six
Heating: Open fire.
Camping: Yes, plenty.

New Totara Flats is situated at the confluence of the Waiohine and Totara Creek on the true right bank (of the Waiohine). It collects a lot of sun.
Sleeps: Around 40 in two bunkrooms.
Heating: Woodburner (but has gas cooking).
Camping: Unlimited once you walk more than 10mins from the hut.

The new Roaring Stag Lodge is a vast improvement on its predecessor - bench bunks comfortably sleep 12, the club has had about 40 there to others discomfort! Located on a terrace next to the Ruamahanga river.
Sleeps: 12 (but see above for comment on floor and deck space!)

New Elder biv (really a small hut) has four bunks and great views right down to Wellington and the Kaikouras. It sits on Renata ridge between the Hutt and Waiotaru catchments.
Sleeps: Four plus one or two on the floor.

Camping: Some limited tops camping on the summit of Elder, plus a couple of spots down the spur where the old ...
