  • South Ohau hut

New South Ohau hut.  Built just next door to the old hut site, but hopefully far enough along to avoid the slip.  It is nice and sunny and a pleasant enough hut in a scummy little catchment. Sleeps: 12 or so on bench bunks. Heating: A potbelly Camping: A little bit on the river terrace below the hut (though it is quite gravelly from ...

  • kiritaki hut.jpg

Kiritaki (aka Sea-Mac motel) is a classic six bunk hut deep in the Leatherwood zone of the Southern Ruahines. Sleeps: Six bunks and room on the floor. Heating: A little pot belly that goes good.  Its a snug hut. Camping: yes plenty of lumpy camping on the grass-come-heli pad outside.  Steve had a night out there while I took over the ...

  • South Ohau hut (old hut)

This hut was removed by DoC in 2003 after a slip collapsed the bank behind the hut.  All that remains is a concrete slab.  There are plans to replace it if a sight can be found in the Ohau which is a) flat; b) not prone to slips.

  • Alpha hut

Alpha Hut, a large hut on the famous Southern Crossing route.  A welcome sight after the climb from Hells Saddle or dropping from the summit of Alpha. Sleeps: at least 24 on bench bunks. Heating: A potbelly - finding dry firewood is a real problem.  Tent space: Not really.

  • No Mans hut (private)

This hut was reputedly done up by DoC and then claimed by the landowners in the early 90s.  If you get permission then the landowners are very friendly to trampers.  The road in the foreground is No Mans road.
