  • Adventures with Tony 1

Adventures with Tony 1 November 2009 Terra Jack (Nixon) Ben Tony (Rac) After missioning around Christchurch for a day buying Jack some new toys, we arrived at Unwin Lodge (Mt. Cook) around midnight. No one was up in the main building, so we poked our heads into the bunkrooms. No one was awake in the first two, but then in ...

  • Along the Fiordland divide

For some reason Fiordland trips play on my mind more than other big trips, something about the legend of the place I suppose.  Anyway, the last thing I wanted at 7am on a Monday morning on the boat across Manapōuri to West Arm was a wind-up Canadian toy bouncing around screeching in my ear.   “You guys off to hike the Dusky that is so ...

  • Waingawa circuit - January 2009.

First trip of the year. I'd had vague plans involving the Orongorongos, but my new flatmate Morgan mentioned some plan involving the uni club and the Tararuas, which sounded just as vague, but more interesting. My other new flatmate Curtis was keen to come too. Curtis is a Canadian exchange student. Bless international students. They come mentally ...

  • Live the track, breath the track, eat the track for breakfast. A sub-30 PK.

What better way to spend Valentines day than with a couple of good mates thrashing yourself half to death along the Tararua tops.  That’s what Kieran, Ben and I thought anyway.   After 4hrs sleep at Putara (thanks to Guy for camping with us and taking that gear back to Wellington!) we were away.  Having done a previous PK ...

  • Re: The picnic is back!

Also, in this vein, trying to sign the hut books at Herepai, Drac, Andersons, Maungahuka, Kime and Alpha within one 24hr period is quite doable, however getting right out to Kaitoke within that same period was just a touch too far.  cheers Kieran and Ben that was a great trip!  and big ups to Guy and Belle - sounds trite but couldn't ...

  • Re: Good tramps?

Depends how near and how easy-moderate :-)  Orongorongo valley - about 40min drive through Wainuiomata, then a couple of hours easy walk into a pretty river.  Have lunch then walk back out.  There are various bush tracks in that area too.  Could camp the night too or they have bookable huts. Kapakapanui Hut - Near Waikanae, ...

  • Weekend wander

Hey I'm pretty keen to get out again this weekend and make the most of the fantastic weather we've been having lately! I was thinking of an overnight trip Saturday/Sunday into Arete Fx. It would involve walking into Mitre Flats, over Mitre (highest point in the Tararuas) and down to Arete Fx Hut for the night, with a splash down the Waingawa ...
