    New Years Plans

So, it's that time of year, time to think about planning the new years extravaganza! My Idea was head down to Takaka or related area around the 27-28 of december and head back around the 5th or so, any one else?

    Christmas and New Years Plans

Christmas on the beach at Takaka anyone? I have a vague plan of heading down the weekend before Christmas to stay with Jess, do some climbing, lying in the sun etc. But depends if anyone else is keen to come across and share petrol/ferry costs...

As for new years, I was thinking of heading down to the Southern Alps just after Christmas and going for a tramp to the Garden of Eden ice plateau! So if anyone's keen for that you just need to know how to use ice axe and crampons and be able to carry a big pack - there'll be quite a bit of glacier travel with ropes, but thats easy enough to pick up if you haven't done it before...

Let me know if your keen for anything!

    Re: New Years Plans

I've booked ferry tickets for the 26th of Dec going to Picton and returning on the 4th of Jan (back at work on the 5th), just me and my car at the mo, so If anyone wants to share the ride down to Picton and/or back and pay me a few dollars to cover some of the cost of putting th car on the ferry and travelling then they are more than welcome to Join me!

I have to warn you that tickets are selling out quickly on both ferries, most decent times have sold out and those that are left have higher than usual prices.. anyone fancy catching a ferry at 1.30 am?

    Re: New Years Plans

I'll probably be heading over that way too. Will prob ferry over shortly after xmas, bike up Takaka way, enjoy all the good company and then head down the West Coast.

Still have to try and work out leave though...

    Re: New Years Plans

Right, I've booked myself (and my parents' car!) onto the Interislander, leaving Welly Mon 29 December on the 8.25am sailing, returning on Wed 7 January on the 10.05pm sailing. Up to three places in the car for intrepid adventurers, but book fast if you want to join me. No fixed plans or unfixed plans or really any plans at all at this stage, but I'd like to join the other groups heading down Takaka way for New Years. After that, I guess we can see where the road takes us - after all, we'll have a car, and the whole South Island in front of us.

Text me on 021 153 9998 or email or message me through the website if you're keen.

    Re: New Years Plans

Right guys I am going to make some sort of attempt to collate all the goings ons with yet another epic New Year plan.

So the plan for who ever is keen is

    What

Go down to Golden bay for some mighty good fun.  There will be climbing, lots of swimming, sitting on the beach, cruising around the area checking out all the fun and cool things there are in golden bay, there may be some tramping.  But most importantly there will be a whole lot of socialising drinking and just general good fun.

    Where are we staying

I have been asking around and checking out the options and as mentioned in the previous posts some people are going down to stay on Jess’s property over Christmas.  However I have been informed that Jess’s property can’t really sustain many people and there will be issues with car parking and facilities such as fresh water and amenities.

So the plan is that from the 26th / 27th December we will be staying at the Hang Dog climbers camp just on the Nelson side of Takaka.  Hang Dog is a very cool place it is very close to the climbing the river for some good swimming and everything else.  They have bikes that you can borrow to shoot into town or up the road.  It is good to have everyone staying in the same place as it gives everyone options for the day weather they choose to go climbing swimming to the beach or adventuring around the place.  Hang Dog cost $5 a night and is well worth it for it’s locality flushing toilets and other amenities.

    Who

Ferry’s are filling up quickly there is limited room for foot passengers but still a bit of room for cars.  What you can actually do is book a car on with just yourself then later on go online and just magically put some more people in your car.  So if you are thinking about coming either get yourself a place in someone’s car or book yourself (and possibly a car) onto a ferry.  Or fly.  Apparently air Takaka will get you there for a reasonable price

From what I can gauge so far this is who’s going and what is happening

This group is going down after Christmas and staying at Paynes

Departing 26th  Dec returning 4th Jan

    Magalie (Car Full)

    Mike

    Emelio

Craig (1 way coming back on the 9th ish)

    Sam (Car Full)

    Gemma

    Morgan

    Bernie

Departing Mon 29 December on the 8.25am sailing, returning on Wed 7 January on the 10.05pm

Michael Pohl (Car 3 seats free)

Departing 30 Dec returning 5th Jan

Scott (Car rental 2 seats free)

    Adam

This group is going before Christmas staying with Jess and either join us at Paynes after or going on tramping epics

    Jess

    Bryan

    Jeremy

    Kieran

    Annabel

    Down in the area

    Amelia O

    Regan

This is the group of people yet to finalise their plans

    Jason

    Amanda

    Katie

    Jane

So that is the plan so far.  If you are keen on coming please get in touch with people with free seats or make some plans to get across the strait shortly.  If you have any comments or want some additions to the plan please get in touch with me through the contact button.

As things progress I will update the plan and put more collated details up.  But I thought this might just provide a clearer idea for now

I'm interested in joining the party heading over in the rental car on the 30th and returning on the 5th.  But what time are they leaving on the 30th?  i see the only time with availability on the ferry is at 615pm.

    Re: New Years Plans

    Hey Chris,

Adam and I are leaving on the 29th of Dec on the 12.30am (30 Dec) Bluebridge sailing and returning on the 10.05pm Interislander on the 5 Jan. I'm going to book a car this week for that time, which I'll pick up and drop off in Picton. Happy to share fuel costs if you want a ride. Better decide asap and book the ferries as spaces are filling up.

Re: New Year holidays - The plan

Now that we are getting a little closer to the time, I though that it would be a good time to post an updated plan on our south island excursions.  There is a lot going on and it looks like it will be a very good time for all.  This is a loose plan but I just hope to provide some idea for people so that we can all manage some cohesion and not have lots of people but all spread randomly across the south island like the last drops of jam on a large piece of bread. By no means is this tying anyone to anything but I thought I would put a little adhesive on the situation.

    The Basic plan

People will come across the strait and various places from the 26th – 30th December. The plan is for everyone to make their way to golden bay and to converge at the Hang dog climbers camp

For the period before New Year there will be a variety of things going on which could be:

    • Climbing
    • Swimming
    • Beaching it
    • Adventuring around the area
    • Trip over to Whanganui inlet, Farewell spit Able Tasman
    • Caving? Or looking at caves
    • Kayaking
    • Lots of drinking
    • Going to the pub Mussel inn

    New Year festivities

The current plan this year is to find a nice spot by the river or on the Takaka hills.  Listen to some tunes drink some beverages light a fire and have a good time.

After New year people will be hanging around for a couple of days from then some are sticking around the area and others are heading off to other areas.  The current plans are:

    • Stay climbing in the area (Magalie Mike Emelio Martine)
    • Hang around in the area perhaps go and camp in other places such as Whanganui inlet
    • Going over to the Nelson area and hanging out there.
    • Going to the Nelson Motorcycle street race on 2nd January.
    • Going to Mt Cook to visit and stay with Annabel and adventure around the place.  This is currently going to be Craig, Jeremy, Morgan? and anyone else who is keen
    • Other trips or adventures in the south

    Accommodation

We will be staying at the hang dog climbers camp from the 26th December through to after New Year. You will need to be in a tent but there are plenty floating around, let me know if you are at a loose end.  Also make sure you all have eating gear as we will be cooking on club cookers and hopfully a BBQ.

I have previously talked to Jess about staying at her property over New Year.  This is not happening and she is not keen for people staying there as property can’t really sustain many people and there will be issues with car parking and facilities such as fresh water and amenities (such as toilets - currently you used the bushes imgane how that would be after a week of people!).

    Transport

It is not too late to get yourself on a ferry or flight to get down south, there are some people with spaces still free in their cars and there are bus services and hitch hiking. Bus companies to check out are K bus and Naked Bus (real cheep deals)  Intercity can also do good deals from time to time

The people (people in bold have cars)

Magalie (Car – Full.  Ferry 26th  Dec returning 4th Jan)

    Mike

    Emelio

Craig (1 way, going to cook after new year and coming back on the 11th ish)

Sam (Car – Full.  Ferry 26th  Dec returning 4th Jan)

    Gemma

    Morgan

    Bernie

Michael Pohl (Car 3 seats free Ferry Mon 29 December on the 8.25am sailing, returning on Wed 7 January on the 10.05pm))

Scott (Rental car 1 seat free Ferry 30 Dec returning 5th Jan)

    Adam

    Scott W

Tim (Car – Full. Ferry 28th returning in the New year)

    Sarah

    Andred

    Rebecca

    Down in the area

    Jess

    Bryan

    Jeremy

    Amelia O

    Regan

Turning up sometime around the 28th - 30th and sticking around until sometime after New Year

    Martine

    Kennith

    Mel

Turning up on the 5th January

    Kieran

    Craig Ryburn

Thanks guys, If you have anything to add subtract or divide please let me know.  It looks like it will be a very good and enjoyable time.  I am really looking forward to a holiday!!
