    Re: mid-winter & AIC

In addition, to come on this trip you will need to have completed a basic alpine instruction course such as the club course happening on the weekend of 26-28 June.

The travel arrangements for this course also need to be finalised shortly and spaces are limited.

The trip will leave Wellington on Friday evening and will return on Sunday night. We will be camping at Whakapapa on Friday night and then stay at one of the lodges on the mountain Saturday night. The lodge is fully equipped with mattresses and cooking facilities but we need to know numbers at least a week prior.

Those going on the mid winter trip will also have priority to ensure that they are competent with the necessary skill level for tramping in alpine conditions.

Skills taught include walking on snow and use of ice axe and crampons as well as self arresting and concentrating on achieving these basic skills to a confident level.

Crampons and ice axes are supplied by the club but you will need all other tramping gear and food.  Food groups will apply for Saturday night.  Your leader/instructor will contact you about this, final meeting details and the cost of the trip.  The cost is expected to be $45-50 pp.

So if you want to come on AIC then you need to ensure that you sign up for the trip by contacting me or signing up at a club meeting at the Welsh Dragon bar over the next week or two.
