    Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

    Hey All,

The trip this weekend is heading to the Aorangis/Cape Palliser area and has the potential to include tramping, lounging in the sun, swimming in waterfalls, camping and marshmellows.  There may be options to do either a traverse of the Aorangis leaving Welly on Friday night or have a lazy weekend leaving on Saturday morning.

If any of that appeals to you head along to the Welsh Dragon tonight and sign up.

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

OK, the plan for this weekend is to drive round to Cape Palliser some time on Saturday, find a place to camp where we can enjoy the sunshine, swim by the waterfalls, scramble around the rocks and drink beer. We’ll go for a bit of a day walk on Sunday, maybe for a mission to find the mysterious Frog tarn (just cos it sounds cool).

People planning to come so far:

    -          Natalie

    -          Hazel

    -          Kieran (car)

    -          Jeremy

    -          Miri

    -          Scott W

    -          Jason

    -          Adam

    -          Craig S (?)

    -          Peter (?)

Anyone else want to come? (you know you want to!)

Kieran has offered to drive, but we’ll need at least 1 more car going at this stage. Who else is happy to bring a car along? What time does everyone (particularly drivers) want to leave on Saturday?

Another option, if anyone else is keen for an actual tramp is to leave Friday night, camp at the Putangirua Pinnacles and on Saturday walk up to Pararaki Hut. On Sunday continue on past Kawakawa and Mangatoetoe huts out to Cape Palliser. Let me know if anyone is up for that.

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

All good. Despite earlier protests I'm not too worried when I leave. As always happy to drive. I'm leaning towards leaving Saturday, maybe going for a really solid walk / jog for a few hours after we get there and then going for a swim before cracking open a few stubbies.

So Jason's car is leaving Saturday morning at 9am.

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Yep I'll probably leave at a similar time - can meet people at Hunter Carpark or pick people up if you're somewhere on the way :)

I'd probably be keener to muck round Saturday afternoon, drink Saturday night and go do a decent day walk on Sunday but am not at all fussed really and could be persuaded either way...

Maybe we should take bolt cutters for the locked gate, apparently its a legal road past the lighthouse!

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

I've never seen the gate at the lighthouse locked in the last 10 years.  It's Maori land there as I understand it and they are happy with people driving through to the Doc land where the gate is locked.   But maybe that has changed since we were there last?

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Can someone tell me if we will be staying within the actual Aorangis? I might have a walk on Sunday and see if I can't find some spring venison!

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

There is a spot not too far away on foot maybe an hour or so where i almost always see pigs and yes I recon we will be staying on the coast but the bush is right there and is plenty in there for the taking.   Jeremy..................:)

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

If anyone is interested in going a little later.

At this stage I am intending on leaving sometime after lunch on Saturday probably mid afternoon.  I have an off road vehicle so we should be able to get pretty close to the campsite too, meaning not too far to carry our drinks.

    So if you are interested…

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Oh cool, well we might as well drive along the coast a bit, at least for those that have 4wd/are keen enough! I'd be keen to take a look up Stonewall Stream and the rocky ridges around there for a daytrip, so maybe camping on the beach down that way would work... I'm sure we won't be hard to find anyway Craig!

Here's a map with the conservation land boundaries Adam (from DOC GIS site http://gis.doc.govt.nz/website/Internet_NZMG_2005/viewer.htm).

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Can we get some input from everyone else on when the intend to leave. Just checking since we may only need to take one car in the morning if enough people would prefer to leave later on.

    Your options are:

9am with Jason and Kieran, or
    Mid afternoon with Craig.

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Right, so from the mouth of Natalie:

The food groups for this weekend are - Kieran, Miri, Scott W, Guy, Hazel for a vege type meal and then Natalie, Jeremy, Jason, Adam, Peter as the carnivorous bunch! We are not planning to stop on the way so bring enough stuff for lunch, breakfast, drinks etc. You will also need to bring a contribution for Saturday night dinner (see later post).

Craig S is coming later on so organise with him if you want to come after 9am - otherwise meet at Hunter carpark at 9am to get a ride with Jason and Kieran. We will bring shelter and cooking equipment, but bring other stuff like you would for a tramp (sleeping bag, mat, raincoat, cutlery, etc).

    Natalie is awesome!

Re: Aorangis/Cape Palliser trip this weekend

Right so for our food group, we are doing vege Nachos! I think I will just get the food, so could you guys just bring 5 bucks each to pay for it? That's Scott, Miri, Guy and Hazel. This will get you a delicious gourmet extravaganza involving guacamole, sour cream and spicy chilli beans! Plus marshmallows for the campfire after...

    Cheers,

Natalie has asked me to organize food. So after many a brutal beating I have conceded to being food organizOR.

    Bangers and mash:

    Mash and Gravy- Natalie

    Onions and veges- Jason

    Red wine-  Jeremy

    Dessert- Peter

    Looking forward to it.

    Adam
