Sparrowhawk biv is a quirky combination of a dog box and a standup joined together - with no bunks in the standup part. It sits just above the bushline on the eastern side of the main range. On this rather chilly night 8 people fitted inside (note our packs didn't!).
Sleeps: 8. Well we did it - actually it would be better ...

This biv may have been removed. It sat on the true left of the Pohangina, and was best reached by dropping off Takapari road. Crossing the Pohangina near here wasn't all that easy. As the photo suggests it was rather rustic.
Sleeps: Two/three
Heating: No
Camping: No

Rockslide is a lonely biv in Apias Creek. The porch on the front doubles the capacity. There's heaps of Whio in the creek.
Sleeps: Four or five
Heating: None
Camping: Yes, there is a rocky river flat in front of the biv

See if you can find it next time you're in the Waikamaka

Toka is another lonely Ruahine biv. The hut book goes back to the 1970s, and there were 20 years between VUWTC visits when we popped in. It sits on the edge of a bog and is surrounded by leatherwood. The steep spur down is a botanists delight with caniverous plants in the tussock.
Sleeps: Two or three
Heating: No
Camping: Not ...

This ''biv'' which is the size of a hut is tucked up in the upper Pohangina and doesn't get a lot of traffic.
Sleeps: Two on bunks, but there's a lot more room on the concrete floor.
Heating: Open fire
Camping: There is some around the hut and more downstream.

This stand up biv sits deep in the canyon of the Waikotore stream. It gets very little sun and is known as ''the fridge.'' The last report I heard was that it had a bad leak. The stream itself is incredible, deeply incised with massive papa bluffs. A very spectacular place.
Sleeps: Two
Heating: No - it's an ...

This biv nestles in a hollow in Black Ridge, not far from the bushedge. A feature here is the ''loo with a view''.
Sleeps: Two
Heating: No
Camping: The hut is in a hollow of leatherwood and long lank tussock, but a wider search of Black Ridge will revel some super fine weather camping.

A nice little biv that nestles off the side of the main Ruahine range south of Totara spur.
Sleeps: Two or three
Heating: None
Camping: None in the leatherwood around the biv, however in fine weather you could camp on the main range itself, there are abundant tarns in this area.
