    Long weekend trip, 22 – 25th Jan

On the calendar we have a trip down for climbing in Payne’s Ford and although Payne’s ford is great it is suspiciously in the south island and with quite a few of us just having come back there may be a lack of keenness for more ferry tax.  Tom may be down that way and may have some plans though… Tom?

So I am organising a trip for the long weekend and it will aim to do some things but the main objective will be finding summer and sun.  So we will be heading north on lateish on Friday night to avoid traffic and some of have something to do till 7:30 ish and we will look at heading up to the central north island for some climbing.  Some places I am thinking of going are Whakapapa gorge, Mangatapopo and Whanganui bay.  We may also think about a trip to the beach somewhere along the way.  It depends on the numbers and who is interested but this could be run a little bit like a climbing road trip or we may just base ourselves somewhere and chill out.  I am also open to a road trip up somewhere like east cape to find out where the sun comes from.

Anyway let me know if you are keen and what you are keen for and we will assemble some plans

    Hey Craig,

My name is Alexandra Croft. I just arrived in NZ last week from Seattle , WA. I am studying abroad this quarter till the end of march at Nga Manu Nature Reserve. I have been looking for people to hike and climb with while staying in NZ. I am an avid rock climber and mountaineer with about 5 years of expereince. I brought most of my climbing gear including my harness,  belay devices, rock shoes, mountaineering boots, tent and much more.  I think i am prepared for most climbing conditions. I saw that you guys are thinking about visiting the central north island this weekend! I was wondering if I could join in the fun. I can bring the membership fee as well.

    Cheers,

    Alexandra Croft

All good all are welcome.  Here is some information.  Anyone who is keen please get in touch with me using the contact button on this post

Hello, this weekend we are planning on running a trip to Whanganui Bay for some lazing in the sun, swimming in the lake, drinking beer and doing some climbing.  I should be a nice summers weekend for it.  Whanganui bay is a southwest bay on lake taupo.  This is an initial email to get things rolling, I will follow up with some more details as I think of them, comments I get and sort out cars and transport. The land is privately owned at Whanganui bay and is $10 per night for camping.  Other costs for the weekend will be petrol and food.

    Plan

The basic plan is to meet on 6:30pm Friday night at the hunter car park at vic uni.  From there we will shuffle into cars and head to the supermarket for the weekends shopping.  I will probably divide us into a couple of food groups to make cooking a bit easier.  We will drive up to Wanganui bay (possibly camping along the way) and plan to spend the weekend there.  There is a possibility that we could spend Saturday and Sunday there then head off to another crag such as Karangahape? Or Whakapapa gorge for a day.  It will all be a pretty laid back affair but if you are really keen on climbing there will be plenty of chance for that and likewise if you are into beer drinking and sun there will be plenty of that

    Gear and experience

There will be climbing for all and there and a variety of grades there.  You don’t need any experience there are a few of us who will be more than happy to show you the ins and outs.  We can also supply equipment like harnesses ropes draws etc.  We have a limited range of holey shoes which we are more than happy to lend.  But you may get more out of climbing if you rent some for the weekend (fergs rent them)  But that is over to you.  We have tents cookers and billies but it would be good if you could bring a tent if you have one.

I will assume that you have all the climbing gear that you need unless you tell me.  So please let me know what you don’t have and let me know if you can bring a tent and how many people you want sleeping in it.  We will try have more space than we need as it will probably be pretty warm.

Would anyone be keen to leave early on sunday (really early) and back Monday evening?  That's probably the only way I could make it up...
