    Kapiti Island :)

    Hey every one,

I am organising a trip to Kapit Island on the 9th or 10th of August, so start thinking now about wether or not you will be able to come, and if  you have any preferance of which day, as I will need to get a DOC permit for you very soon!

"Kapiti is one of New Zealand’s most valuable nature reserves, and it is the only large island sanctuary for birds between the Hauraki Gulf in the north and New Zealand’s southern outlying islands.

Nature reserves are areas set aside for the protection of native plants and animals, where human influence is kept to a minimum. Every effort is made to minimise the adverse effects of any introduced plants or animals that have managed to establish on the island. Most people never get an opportunity to visit nature reserves because access to them is so difficult.

Kapiti is one of a few relatively accessible island nature reserves. It provides an opportunity for people to observe birds that are either very rare or absent from the mainland, and to see the recovery of vegetation after intensive modification during last century."

Also, those of you that have been on the island before, do you recomend going to Ranatira Point or to the North End?

    Thanks!!

    Terra :)

    Re: Kapiti Island :)

    Hey,

I have been trying to wrangle deals out of the ferry companies, but to no avail - looks like the price for the day will be $66. That is $11 for the DOC permit and $55 for the ferry. But from what I have heard about the island it will be well worth it! One of the only places you can go to see stitchbird, kokako, takahe, brown teal, and saddleback in the wild. You will also most likely see kereru (NZ pigeon), North Island tomtit, kaka (some very freindly - Sophie can tell you awsome stories about them!), whitehead, tui, fantail, and silvereye along with skinks and geckos.

So please tell me by next tuesdays meeting if you can come so I can get permits!

    Thanks,

     Terra :)

Sorry, forgot to add - we will be catching the ferry at 9am from Kapiti Boating Club, Paraparaumu Beach, and returning 3.30pm to Paraparaumu.

    Thanks,

     Terra :)

    Re: Kapiti Island :)

Hello! I'd be very keen. So this is just a 1 day trip?  Will we be able to get a ride to Paraparaumu beach and from there on the way back?

    Thanks a lot,

    Lana

    Re: Kapiti Island :)

Hello, I am very interested in joining this trip.  Please let me know all details.  You can e-mail me details at dathatdeep@student.vuw.ac.nz.  I was also wondering about transportation to and from Paraparaumu Beach.  What should be bring in preparation and when and where should we pay fees for the trip?

    Cheers,

    Deeps

    Re: Kapiti Island :)

This is just a day trip. Leaving Wellington earlyish and back early evening.

There's usually enough people with cars coming along on trips that transport is never an issue. The majority of trips leave from and return to Hunter car park at Uni (near the student union). Usually people give the driver a few dollars to cover fuel costs.

Terra will be in touch with all those interested in the near future with further details. Any trips you go on can be paid for at any of the Tuesday meetings. Look / Ask for Jess. Often seen carrying a lunch box, except its loaded with cash :)

    Re: Kapiti Island :)

    Hello,

So if you are keen to come, you must tell me and pay Jess $11 (for DOC permit) by or on next Tuesday so that I can buy you a permit.

    So check your calenders!!! :)
