NEW ZEALAND MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL Wellington will be hosting the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival (formally the Wanaka film festival) on November 4 2008 at 6.30pm. This is your chance to see the work of some of New Zealand’s up and coming outdoors film makers and support the alpine club. The evening programme includes an exhilarating re-enactment of the first South Island coast to coast. Two adventurous kiwis (Steve Gurney & Steve Moffat)drag, lug and paddle a heavy wooden canoe from west to east duplicating a journey first made in 1899. “First Light” takes us on a journey around the magical Otago and Catlins coastline in search of the best surf at first light. Filmed over a year by a Dunedin student this film won best New Zealand short film at the NZ Mountain Film Festival in Wanaka. In Russia the grizzly bears are renowned. A Canadian conservationist’s risky connection with these dangerous animals comes across in this award winning documentary. Finally in “The Beckoning Silence”, Joe Simpson tells the story of climber Tony Kurz’s heroic battle for survival on the Eiger. In this gripping action-packed adventure film with a difference, Simpson finally confronts his demons on the Eiger’s north face and rediscovers the thrill of the climb.
