    Bouldering outdoors,around wellington?

    Second post already oO

well, again me and my mate would be interested in getting out and doing "real" stuff.

but as im from overseas and my mate is from cchurch we haven't really got much idea what is out there close by wellington, although we found some sweet spots around breaker bay earlier this year.

So,if youre into bouldering and want to get out, post bellow with any idea :D

    Hey,

Best spot for this kinda stuff might be Baring Head (opposite side of Harbour entrance). To get there, as one could anticipate already, you gotta drive around the harbour, tho, unless you paddle across, which is not what I would recommend these days. You drive to Wainuiomata via Lower Hutt; from there (Wainui) you take the Coast rd. til you get to the beach. Leave your vehicle on the carpark and walk to the right as far as you can get (which means: through the river:). You'll then get to some awesome giant boulders scattered along the coast (up to 5m high, nice grippy rocks). - Good bouldering in its classic sense, but ask Olli, the club's climbing officer.

    Hey,

Yeah as Nicolai says, Baring Head is probably your best bet for bouldering around Welly, for more directions and an idea of what type of climbing it is try http://www.cactusclimbing.co.nz/powerband/guides/baring.html. Theres a few bolted routes there too but is largely boulders. As the site says, be a bit wary of when you go, purely as if theres a decent southerly blowing it is like having the back of your legs sand blasted.....

Furthur around the coast is another real up and coming bouldering area which is receiving alot of attention, Turakirae Head, access takes a bit longer but seems well worth it for the problems they have there, again the same site provides a bit of a guide as to what there which is quite sweet http://www.cactusclimbing.co.nz/powerband/guides/topos/turakirae/one.htm

Both are awesome and in close driving distance to welly, you can camp there but be wary of leaving important stuff in your car at the carpark, theres not much to do in Wainui at night....

    have fun - Kate :)
