    Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

    Hi guys!

Just planning my last weeks in NZ after the exams....

Are we heading to Mt Matthews on 15-17.6.? What kind of trip will it be?

    Cheers,

    Katriina

Please, could somebody inform me whether there are some activities during this weekend or not? Have to make plans ;)

Hi Katriina- I think that there will be a trip going to mt. mathews this weekend, but not sure exactly what it will be (one or two day, walk or part-run). do you, or anyone else, have a preference? There will be a sign-up sheet on tuesday but it would be good to gauge interest before then.

    Cheers, -Jess

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

I and my friend would prefer "medium-level" tramping from Saturday morning to Sunday (if it doesn't take too long to drive there).

Where is this place? Is it really a mountain or do we still have to tramp in the bush;)?

Mt Mathews is a mountain - you can see it from Wellington! Its the pointy one across the harbour in the Rimutakas that looks vaguely like a volcano but isn't :) The track up it starts at Baines hut where we had Bushball this year.

Me and Annabel did a day trip up there last year - took us about 9 hours return from Catchpool, though we mite have mucked around a bit! Its also pretty much in bush the whole way, with odd glimpses out across the ranges - so not your typical mountain perhaps! Theres a good view and a(exposed if windy) campsite about half way up at the saddle with Mukamuka, so would be a reasonable two day trip.

But theres probably more fascinating places you could go...

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

Thanks for information! I just want to go outdoors. The place doesn't play so big role: if you prefer some other place, it's cool anyhow. I prefer actually anything but solely bush tramping...

Can't wait to get rid of all the Uni staff and enjoy the nature:)

Hey guys, it looks like several people are keen for a day trip this weekend. If there are more of you out there who want to do a two day trip (mt mathews is best done as a two day thing) please let me know ASAP. There would need to be a willing driver as well.

    Cool beans

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

I'd be keen for another attempt to get to Mt. Matthews summit in AWESOME conditions (and only then :). Yeah, a bit though in one day in winter... although doable (start at 6am and stuff). -  On the other hand, a dazzling daytrip would be sweet, as well (could get some more stuff done). Any concrete ideas for that at this stage? Kayaking would be cool, as well. I could drive anyway, no worries.

    Cool bananas,

Ok guys, so it looks like your cars are Timmy and Nicolai at this point- and theres a couple votes for a red-rocks venture. I'm gonna hand things off to those two. Have a great trip and remember your rain gear!

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

    Hey Jess,

First of all: I'm a human being rather than a car. And Timmy... well, I'm not sure.

Secondly, as you may know, I live at Welly South Coast (just moved into the marine lab...), which means that Hunter Carpark is not quite on the way to the Red Rocks for me.

The seal colony is coolest from under water (not only literally), so how about grabbing some wetsuits, snorkel, mask and fins and play hide and seek with NZ fur seals? (We may have to go a bit further round for that towards Karori Rock.) A second attractive thing in this area is either mountain biking or a loop walk from Owhiro Bay (or, alternatively, the wind turbine). Fairly easy, I've done that with Tevas once.

    Hasta pronto,

    Nicolai

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

really? i could have sworn i heard you make zooming sounds the other day...:)

i was just thinking that the people with cars probably would want to make the final call on where they drive said cars, because in my experience if the drivers dont want to go everyone gets very sore feet :)

off to do some donuts in the uni parking lot now... enjoy

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

I'm happy to pick people up from the car park.

I definatly won't be swimming though

What time suites people? How many do we have so far?

    Re: Mt Matthews 15-17.6.?

So you are definitely keen on  going to red rocks? I thought heading out of Wellington would have been refreshing... Of course, we would  share the  petrol costs... What about Rimutaka? Could you do some day trip there?
