  • Iron Gates hut

  • Leon Kinvig hut

    Leon Kinvig was a deer culler who drowned in the Pohangina in the 1960s.  The hut named after him is superb, and this branch of the Pohangina is a superb summer trip. Sleeps: 10 on two platforms Heating: Open fire Camping: A small amount near the hut.

  • Iron Bark hut

    A gem of a four-bunker in the lower Mangatera. Sleeps: Four Heating: Open fire Camping: Yes, good camping around the hut

  • Triangle hut

    A cosy hut high in the Orua river.  Best reached via Rangiwahia and Triangle spur. Sleeps: Six Heating: Corker cooker Camping: A little around the hut

  • Waikamaka hut

    One of the HeretaungaTramping clubs yellow and blue huts.  The Waikamaka valley is superb Ruahine tramping, and in spring a short walk up valley to the bushedge will reveal a garden of alpine flowers. Sleeps: 10 or so on two platforms. Heating: Pot belly Camping: You will find some

  • Wakelings hut

    Wakelings is in the middle reaches of the Waikamaka.  A good track will get you up on the Mokai Patea range. Sleeps: Six or eight on one platform Heating: Corker cooker Camping: Yes, good camping on river flats below hut and a superb camping flat about half an hour downstream

  • Crow hut

    A classic six-bunker on a terrace high above the Kawhatau river.  Steep climbs onto either the Mokai-Patea or Hikurangi range leave from here.  You will often see large trout in the pools below the swing bridge. Sleeps: Six Heating: Corker cooker Camping: Yes, plenty around the hut

    This biv may have been removed.  It sat on the true left of the Pohangina, and was best reached by dropping off Takapari road.  Crossing the Pohangina near here wasn't all that easy.  As the photo suggests it was rather rustic. Sleeps: Two/three Heating: No Camping: No
