One of the HeretaungaTramping clubs yellow and blue huts. The Waikamaka valley is superb Ruahine tramping, and in spring a short walk up valley to the bushedge will reveal a garden of alpine flowers.
Sleeps: 10 or so on two platforms.

Wakelings is in the middle reaches of the Waikamaka. A good track will get you up on the Mokai Patea range.

A classic six-bunker on a terrace high above the Kawhatau river. Steep climbs onto either the Mokai-Patea or Hikurangi range leave from here. You will often see large trout in the pools below the swing bridge.

Not far from Sunrise hut via Armstrong saddle, Top Maropea provides a more authentic tramping experience if the crowds get to you at Sunrise.

This biv may have been removed. It sat on the true left of the Pohangina, and was best reached by dropping off Takapari road. Crossing the Pohangina near here wasn't all that easy. As the photo suggests it was rather rustic.

This is a very convinient roadend hut in the northern Ruahines. Its a seven minute walk from Mangleton rd

Aranga is private but you are welcome to stay. Not that you'd want to. Its usually filled with rubbish and is something of an eyesore. Its sits on the ridge that joins Parks Peak to the main range at the head of the Makaroro.

Rockslide is a lonely biv in Apias Creek. The porch on the front doubles the capacity. There's heaps of Whio in the creek.
