    1.

Everyone's hard work on saving the Maui's and Hector's Dolphins has been worth it, with a better decision being made by the Government than we would have had otherwise to protect the dolphins. As always, they could be better but it's still progress. Check out http://www.careforthewild.org/default.asp or http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO0805/S00498.htm for details.

Eco Conference: Sustainable New Zealand: Rhetorice or Reality?

This will be held from 27-29 June in Wellington. The progamme and confernce flyer are attached. Gecko will hopefully be providing a subsidy for this.

    Sane Conference: June 20 – July 2

The time has come again for us students all across Aotearoa New Zealand to come together for the 2008 Aotearoa Students of Sustainability National ***.

We are inviting all students from any tertiary institution to come to Wellington for this gathering from the 30th of June to the 2nd of July.

The *** will build on the progress and connections created between students at last year's inaugural event and will provide the opportunity to meet other active and like-minded students from all over the country in an energising and inspiring atmosphere. Come and be a part of strengthening New Zealand's sustainability movement.

    D. Matariki/envi day events

    E. the secret freeze…..

    A. Volunteers needed for World Environment Day:

World Environment Day is kicking off next week. The Ministry for the Environment is aiming to engage small businesses as well as the public get involved in the week, in a way that is relavent for their business. For example, retail shops are encouraged to create WED themed window displays, and to advertise/promote their sustainable products, services and practises on that week. Bars/cafes are encouraged to promote sustainable consumer activities, e.g. by offering discounts on coffee in reusable cups, or a free first beer if you bike/bus to the bar, etc. We need volunteers who can approach their local businesses, inform them of the week and encourage them get involved, even in a small way. There is a letter attached to give to businesses. You can download the WED poster to display from http://www.mfe.govt.nz/withyou/wed/wed-poster-shell-a4.pdf and there are many other resources from the website www.world.environment.govt.nz.

If you can visit a few of your local businesses (or even forward the letter and poster by email) I can give you printed posters and the letter to pass on. Thanks in advance, there is much potential in this, and limitless creative ways for businesses to get involved. Contact Shamina on 0273419125 or Matt on 0273189527. :)

B.If you want to do something for World Envi Day, this is a great way to participate, and have a bit of fun at the same time. .

The activity that we need volunteers for is the 'Red Carpet' at the train station on the morning of the 4th June, from just before 8.00- 8.30 am (so you can be back on time for work!) . A red carpet will be laid out in the station, and we will have a comedian there to interact with the passengers as they come off the trains. We need volunteers to be there to applaud the passengers walking down the red carpet, and the more the merrier (we're aiming for around 100 people), so if you can volunteer to come along that would be really appreciated. MfE might be putting on a breakfast after to thank everyone who participated, so it will be a good networking opportunity also.

Please contact Matt Gardner on matthew_gardner@urscorp.com or 027 341 9125 if you can participate!

    C. Homemade Reusable bag give away

I have a lot of old, unique material and would like to use this to make on mass reusable bags to give to people free outside supermarkets on World Environment Day/week. You are invited to take a study break and join us in sewing reusable bags together! Creativity (or sewing talent) welcome, chai tea will be flowing. This could happen this Sunday, Monday or on a evening next week at my place in Newtown depending on availability. Contact Shamina on 0273419125 or 3899259 if you would like to help.

    D. Matariki/Envi Day Activity

On Saturday June 7, Jessica Hutchings will be holding an event at her farm to celebrate matariki and world envi day. There will be tree planting, deicious food and celebration of matariki.

If you would like to go, catch the 8.05am train from Wgtn and Jessica can pick you up from Upper Hutt on the Sat morning.

If you could come earlier on the Sat. or even a few of you to come and stay on the Friday night, help out and share a meal - you could catch the train out and we could pick you up.

Email J.V.Hutchings@massey.ac.nz if you would like to go out on the Friday or Saturday.

You've probably heard already Wellington is the host city for World Environment day 2008. We think this gives us good cause to celebrate!

With generous support from MFE, WCC is able to host the Eco Party at the Wellington Town Hall, Friday 6 June from 7.00-11.00 pm featuring Ryan Prebble, Samuel Flynn Scott & the Bunnies on Ponies, and Open Souls.

It's free and everyone is welcome.

    5.

Grateful if you could forward this email to your network to see if people would like to support my petition to WCC (http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/e-petitions/ep/details/23).

Cycling is obviously an option to reduce the rate of carbon emissions and traffic congestion. It is also an excellent exercise to improve our health condition. However, there is no adequate cycle lanes and secure bike-parking spaces in Wellington.

In France, there is a successful "free-bike programme" in Paris. This attracts people in Paris to use bicycles instead of private cars to commute from place to place in city. This change has greatly reduced the rate of carbon emissions and traffic congestion in city (http://www.nytimes..com/2007/07/16/world/europe/16paris.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin). Following the great success in Paris, London plans to implement a similar "free-bike programme" in 2010. This programme includes establishing series of cycle lanes; and sufficient bike parking spaces at popular spots (http://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6610,s1-3-12-16845-1-P,00.html).

In this connection, I make an e-petition to WCC to see if similar programme could be implemented in Wellington. I understand it would definitely take years to make our dream comes true. However, the sooner the better. If this petition suits you, please give it a go. Your support will definitely give more pressure to WCC to seriously consider it.

Thanks for your time and support! Regards

I'm looking for a student who would be available part time, from a few hours a week to say 20 hours a week, it really is a set project that can be completed in whatever time suits.

The job is working with us to obtain ISO 14001, specifically the Enviro- smart process.

The job would suit someone who has a passion in this area, is details and enjoys outlining processes
