Hey here is a list of some of the cool environmental events comming up around here.
1.Gecko meetin in Collins Room in the Student Union Building at 12pm Tuesday April 1. This meeting will be a bit of an info session on carbon neutrality, with Tushara Kodikara, a Gecko and author of a thesis on carbon neutrality at Vic, and Andrew Wilks, the uni environment committee chairman, to tell us all about it. The aim is to create a campaign to encourage the uni to become carbon neutral, and this is the first step.
2. GOOD WATER COMPANY AND HOMEGROWN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Good Water Company have produced the first biodegradable drink
bottle in NZ made from plant extracts! It's an exciting new project
that needs support in its early stages and hopefully very soon the
bottles can be on many store shelves and properly recycled in order
to keep them extra sustainable. There's heaps of info on the Good
Water site: http://www.goodwater.org.nz so if you're interested check
it out!
In line with this, I'm currently looking for about 29 volunteers to
help out at the Homegrown NZ music concert that is going to be held
in Wellington on April 26. The work you would be doing is basically
watching over a mini recycle station at the event, encouraging people
to recycle, get them to put the right thing in the right place, and
talking to people about Good Water! It's a pretty easy job and you
get into the event for absolutely free (tickets usually $75), soooooo
if you're interested, you can contact me ASAP at
blumhahann@student.vuw.ac.nz OR 02102796930 OR 499 6399
3. Kapiti Island Trip – May 3. The cost for this will be about $35 at this stage, mainly due to ferry. We may be able to make this less, but please register anyway if you think you can come. We will go out on the ferry and spend the day on the beautiful island.
4. IGM – Come along to the Vic Earth (rep group for students of school of geography, environment and earth sciences) Inaugral General Meeting this Thursday at 5pm in Cotton 304, with a free BBQ afterwards!
5. Calling all Wellington friends - ECO needs your help!
This year ECO's Annual Street Appeal will take place
in Wellington on Friday 28 March 2008. We would
greatly appreciate if you would consider volunteering
to help us with collecting on the day.
Last year we collected over $1,500 thanks to around 20
dedicated volunteers. This year we hope to have even
more collectors out on the streets. More people means
more donations, which are essential to help us carry
out our work for the environment.
If you would like to register your interest, please
contact Amelia at the ECO office on 04 385 7545, or
email eco@eco.org.nz for more information.
ECO is Environment and Conservation Organisations of
Aotearoa New Zealand. Look them up at www.eco.org.nz.
They are a network of over 60 environmental
organisations, of which gecko is a member.
6.ECO is pleased to announce our Annual Conference for 2008: "Sustainable New Zealand: Rhetoric or Reality?"
The conference will be held in Wellington from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June, at St Johns in the City Church, corner Willis and Dixon Streets, Wellington Central.
The 2008 Annual General Meeting of ECO will take place during the conference, on Saturday 28 June.
The ECO membership is now invited to submit items for inclusion on the AGM agenda. Please forward any agenda items to me at the ECO office ecooffice@inspire.net.nz or by post to the address below, by 31 May 2008.
