    * Gross National Happiness talk with Aaron Packard

                Monday 31st March, 5pm

                CO304, Cotton Building, Victoria University

What if Gross Domestic Product (GDP) were to fade into irrelevance, because the world's governments realised that focussing on GDP growth did not serve the wellbeing or happiness of the planet's people? What could replace it as a measure for development?

It was this question that led Rebeka and I to the Third International Conference on Gross National Happiness (GNH), held in Thailand in November 2007, and then on to Bhutan, from where the concept originates. We wanted to find out more about the possibilities GNH might offer as a vision for development. The 400 conference participants came from many parts of the world, although the majority hailed from Mekong Delta countries. The conference ran for six days, in Nongkhai (North Eastern Thailand) and Bangkok. Over the course of the conference, we began to understand more deeply the values and intentions that underpin GNH.

GNH creates such an environment through understanding social suffering as personal suffering, observing the interconnectedness of life, seeking to treat root causes rather than symptoms, valuing life and so on. These principles are broadly pursued through the four pillars of GNH –

    1.  Maintaining the pristine environment

    2.  Sustainable economic growth

    3.  Good governance

    4.  Preserving cultural heritage

To find out more about Gross National Happiness and Aaron's experiences in Thailand and Bhutan come along to Monday the 31sts VicIDS meeting!
