Need to study a 1:50,000 topo map for planning just another weird tramp but haven't got it handy? Want to get some cool aerial shots from the area with -if you wish so- a semi transparent topo map on top of it? Forget Google Earth: Log yourself in to the Vic uni Library databases (if you're student at Vic), choose MapToaster and off you go. It's even possible to spot huts in the Tararuas and on Mt. Taranaki, for example; some tracks are visible, too. However, not all regions are covered by aerials, but for almost all there are Landsat images available - as well as 1:50,000 maps or 1:250,000, respectively. It's even possible to save these maps and print them out. You could get GPS coordinates, as well. Check it out, it's great!
