Wanted: ideas and aspirations for Baring Head

    Posted on 12 November 2010

Greater Wellington Chair Fran Wilde is urging interested groups and individuals to be part of an upcoming public workshop on opportunities for future tourism and recreation use at Baring Head.

The Baring Head property was purchased earlier this year by a Greater Wellington-led consortium in order to put the block in public ownership for the enjoyment of future generations.

“Baring Head holds a special place in the hearts of many people. Most of us have experienced the beautiful sight of this iconic part of the region when returning to Wellington by ferry or flying in from the south.

“Now that Baring Head’s in public hands we can really make the most of what the land offers, from the preservation and enhancement of coastal biodiversity to opportunities for recreation and potential tourism use.”

The workshop, organised by Greater Wellington in conjunction with Tourism Research Consultants, will begin with a short presentation, followed by a forum for people to make comments and talk with Greater Wellington representatives about their ideas and aspirations.

Chair Wilde says good progress has already been made towards establishing community participation in Baring Head’s future. “A Friends of Baring Head group, containing a number of stakeholders including representatives from conservation groups, is being established. We’re also working very closely with our funding partners – Hutt City Council, the Department of Conservation and the Nature Heritage Fund – in assessing future uses of the block.”

The Baring Head block will be officially opened to the public on Sunday 13 February 2011.
