    Running in Wellington

Hey everyone, I'm really keen to go for a run for a couple of hours this weekend. Can anyone suggest anywhere where I could go? I dont have a car (but could get train/bus), and I want something a little different from my normal route around Kelburn.

For me it would be Otari Wilton's bush.

If you run up the hill behind and take a right at the top you can come out at Crofton Downs then follow the road down and home. Takes 50 minutes.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. How do I get to the hill behind?

Some good runs around the karori wildlife sanctuary too. lots of tracks inside and around the outer perimeter if you dont feel like parting with a few bucks. Also if the weather is good the track along from makara peak to mt kaukau (or the other direction) is a beautiful one.

Yeah the skyline track (includes the bit from Makara to Mt Kaukau that Jess mentioned) is rad, you can get all the way out to Ohariu Valley if you have enough time! and there's lots of little tracks that go off it to different parks along the way and tunnels and stuff to explore :)

But yeah it does get so windy up there that you have to literally crawl sometimes!

You can get a set of free little maps of tracks all around wellington from tourist information centres and the library too which are pretty cool and just to top it off they are colour-coded (I'm a sucker for matching sets of things!)

    Re: Running in Wellington

Um yeah having a bit of a penchant for running and general fitness myself, I suggest definetly do some running in the town belt ie Tinakori hill for starters (full of groovy little tracks off the main ones and you could almost spend an hour exploring every nook and cranny popeyes' cave for one) . Along the waterfront, oriental bay and then up onto Mt Vic via Hay St and Telford Tce and generally running along and around Mt Vic's tracks. From Brookly up to the windturbine (via the roller coaster) and possibly up to Hawkins hill and out into happy valley via spooky gully, where you'll come out onto the road beside the tip and back to brooklyn. Ah there's heaps really.

Really nice is also Miramar Peninsula (pretty windy at times, tho, but flat as), either around the northern or southern tip. Or the South Coast from Owhiro Bay to the Red Rocks and back or from Island Bay to "The Point" and then back across Southgate / Mt.Albert. The Makara Peak - Mt. Kaukau one is really cool, indeed, although pretty advanced... Probably I just need someone keen to give it a go by running. A Southern Walkway - Wilton/ Northland circuit looks doable, too. Heaps of options!

How about the occasional weekend-run somewhere in Welly? I'd be keen to try some new routes, too.

Nicoli: I'd defiantly be keen to run together (or with more if people are keen) if thats what you meant but I'm not especially fit. We could at least start the run together and I could watch you zoom off into the distance. Where are you keen to go?

If this wasnt what you meant, thats cool. I'll still very happy to head out on my own,

    Katherine

    Re: Running in Wellington

Yepp, that's what I had in mind I guess. Nah, no worries, I'm not that superfit either. I'm actually trying to get back into this - while my brother will do the New York City Marathon soon - for the second time... Currently I am fairly happy with 40min - 1hr runs, more the relaxed pace kinda thing. Have got a car, so it would be possible to check out some new trails. Live in Wilton, so would be easy to pick people up around there (Northland, Kelburn etc.) and depending on the final destination. Preferably on Saturdays or Sundays if nothing else is on the TC calendar or for those who are piking on a tramp.

Anyone else interested in runs on an occassional basis? Shawn? Kieran? Annabel? Jess? Hazel? Bernacles:)? Darren? Andred? Anyone else I didn't mention?

Try the private message thingy for further networking. Cheers,

    Nicolai

Well when you have time and are keen, suggest a time and a place and then we can see how many people want too as well.
