I just found these jobs advertised and thought others might be interested. Apply even if you don't think you have the qualifications, and 5 months is too long for the uni summer...I'm sure there's some negiotiation.
Summer Mountaineers (2) Department of Conservation Canterbury Conservancy Aoraki/Mt Cook Area
5 month contracts - variable/staggered start and finishing dates (between October/November 2007 and March/April 2008).
We require (2) Mountaineers to join the Aoraki/Mt Cook Alpine Rescue team over the 2007/2008 summer period. You will be required to live and work in Aoraki/Mt Cook Village, base of New Zealand's premier alpine region.
Summer Mountaineers have played a crucial role in assisting with the search and rescue function at Aoraki/Mt Cook for over 30 years. The position(s) require applicants to have a diverse range of skills and abilities.
Key responsibilities include:
Alpine Search and Rescue: * Participating in SAR training (to an international 'best practice' standard) * SAR operations (team member) * Maintenance of rescue equipment and the emergency services buildings.
Visitor Facilities: * Assisting with the maintenance & upgrade of alpine huts, shelters, tracks and signs, within Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park * Servicing of visitor facilities.
Visitor Information: * Providing visitor safety information.
These positions are ideally suited to active climbers with a working knowledge of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (or equivalent in similar alpine areas).
Qualifications from the NZMGA/NZOIA/SARINZ would be desirable.
