BAAA - Newsletter of the Victoria University of Wellington Tramping Club

Volume 18, Issue 1, May 1999

Editor's Bit

Hello everyone and welcome to another tramping and climbing filled year!  There have already been a couple of trips run for the year – but alas due to work and dodgy ankles I haven’t made it along to any trips yet (sigh!)  I hope all those who went along on Freshers and Bushcraft all enjoyed themselves despite the unfriendly introduction to Tararua weather on the Freshers trip, see the stories on the next few pages.

We have heaps and heaps of trips coming up to many different areas – see the upcoming trip page for details.  Anyone who does go on a trip and really enjoyed themselves AND has a cool or funny story, joke or quote from the trip Please write it down and give it to either Catherine or I to put in the newsletter or magazine.  We love to hear about the trips!

Special thank you goes to Catherine – the assistant publicity officer who despite me writing the editor’s blurb is in fact the main editor of this issue of BAAA, while I’m off gallivanting around Australia… Thank you, thank you, thank you!

See you in the mountains

Assistant Editor's Bit

It’s nearing the end of April and I’ve finally got round to putting Baaa together.  Freshers, Bushcraft and Rockcraft are well and truly over once again for another year and it’s time to get into some serious tramping.  By now everyone will have seen the excellent line up of trips VUWTC has planned for the year.  Whether you’re into weekend trips in the Tararuas, rockclimbing, or enjoying a soak in hot pools after spending the day up Ruapehu, there should be a trip for you.

For those members new to the club this newsletter is our way of keeping everyone in touch with what’s going on the club and for you all to hear about those trips you wish you had been able to go on but were unable to for whatever reason.  It’s also a chance for everyone to practice their journalistic skills and to write up a trip report for any trip they may have been on during the year.  I know it has already been said but…if you went somewhere cool and you want to inspire others to go there too then write up a report and give it to either myself or Anna who will probably either publish it in our next  issue of BAAA or hang on to it for HEELS (the annual club magazine).

The Easter trip to Taranaki over mid-term break I hear was a success and it sounds like everyone had a good time despite a few changes in plans due to weather.  Congratulations also to those guys who recently did a Carkeek Picnic, something for me to aim for one day!

For those of you interested in being involved in Search and Rescue, talk to Leigh Matheson or Dave Walker at one of the meetings, or give them a call (numbers are on the membership card) – they’re always looking for volunteers.

Well that’s all from me, until the next issue.

Catherine
