So take a break from study, come elect a new committee and then enjoy the biggest taco tuesday of the year!

The meeting will be in SU216/217 on Tuesday 18th October at 7.30pm.(same place/time as normal). There'll be a few snacks as well:)

Cheers,

Beth

AIC, Snow Caving and Skiing 29th - 31 July

Hi everyone,

This weekend the plan is to head on up to Ruapehu and hit the snow. There'll be a variety of things going on including AIC basics for people that haven't done any snow stuff before, snow caving and other activities(to be confirmed) for those slightly more experienced and for people who prefer to be lazy and get carried up a mountain and then slide back down there'll also be a bunch of us skiing/boarding.

Plan at the moment is to head up Friday night and get back Sunday night. We will be camping/snow caving both Friday and Saturday night. Cost $50ish (may be less TBC). Bring your own breakfast, lunches and snacks, Friday night will be takeaways, Saturday will be group dinners.

To come on this trip you will need all the standard tramping gear on the gear list - on right hand side of website home page - plus

Boots - must be able to keep the snow out - gaiters are also strongly advised

Full waterproofs/wind proof - jacket, pants and gloves - you can get "pants in a bag" from the Warehouse that work alright (in fact I own and use them)

Lots and lots of warm clothes beanie, polypro, down jackets etc - it will be cold!

Sunglasses and sunscreen

The club will provide tents, cookers, billies and technical gear such as ice axes, crampons, helmets - if you have your own please bring it (and let us know) as the club only has so much gear and not all of it is the flashest

To sign up come to the meeting tomorrow night or flick me an email at bethparkin@hotmail.com before Wednesday morning. When you sign up make sure to let me know what you're keen to get up to and what your experience is so we can put you in an appropriate group :).

Should be an awesome weekend and the weather is looking great at this stage!

Cheers,

Beth

Cactus Gear on Sale this Weekend

Hi everyone,

See message below from Cactus - they'll be at the TSB Bank Arena this weekend offering 20% off all their gear!! There's also a chance to win $2000 worth of Cactus gear if you sign up to their mailing list. So if you're looking for some good quality gear and also want to feel warm and fuzzy by helping to support a Christchurch business read on!

Wellington-born company, Cactus Climbing, will be in on Stand #23 at the Hands-Up Wellington Expo at the TSB Bank Arena on 2nd and 3rd July, and is keen to show members of the Victoria University Tramping Club our latest and greatest gear. In fact, we’re so keen to see you that we’ll give you 20% off any product you buy or order at the Cactus stand over that weekend if you just come on down and say ‘Hi’. The event itself is all about Wellington people giving Christchurch businesses who have been badly affected by the last 9 months of earthmoving and closed-off CBD a “hand-up”, and boy do we appreciate it.

Next weekend Francis and I will be taking a trip up North near to Mt Ruapehu. The plan at the moment is to drive up on Friday night leaving from Hunter carpark and camp at the road end on Friday and stay at a hut in the park on the Saturday night. Depending on weather Saturday we will climb Ngauruhoe aka Mt. Doom, if the weather isn't behaving we will try to go up it on Sunday instead. We'll also be aiming to do part or all of the Tongariro crossing as well depending on how groups/cars/weather work out. This will be a great opportunity to put into practice skills learnt on AIC and also see some awesome landscapes!!

To come on this trip you need to have either attended AIC (this weekend) or have equivalent experience. You will need all the usual tramping gear plus waterproof pants, gloves, sunglasses and boots with a stiff sole. The club will provide ice axes, crampons, tents and cookers. The cost of the trip will be about $50 to cover petrol.

You can sign up at the meeting next Tuesday or send me an email (bethparkin@hotmail.com) before 9am Wednesday so that I have enough time to sort out groups/transport. If you email after this I can try and get you away on the trip but can't guarantee it. If you email me could you please include the following details: Name (first and last), fitness, experience if you are not going on AIC this weekend, dietary requirements and a contact phone number.

This weekend in addition to the Mt Taranaki trip there will also be a trip to the Kaweka's. This trip will be a medium plus trip, although depending on how many people are keen and whether extra cars are available we could potentially have several groups.

The plan is to drive up on Friday evening, getting group food on the way; camp at the road end (where there are hotpools) Do a couple of solid (8 hourish) days on the Saturday and Sunday hopefully with some tops travel if the weather behaves and aim to make it down to some more hotpools for some cocktails/wine on Sunday evening. On Monday we would have up to four hours of walking out to the car and then drive back to Wellington.

Gear you will need for this trip is the standard tramping gear - as I'm keen to get onto the tops overtrouser, a decent jacket and gloves will be needed + your togs for the hot pools. Tramping boots (rather than sneakers) are highly recommended for this trip.

As the Kaweka's are about 5 hours drive away the cost of the trip will be about $35. You will also need either a backcountry hut pass or to buy hut tickets (I will confirm the number you need when routes/groups are confirmed) for the huts we will stay at.

I'll be at the meeting tomorrow night for signups or you can email me on bethparkin@hotmail.com.

Dr. Thomas O'Brien from the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies at VUW has produced a short survey on environmental participation and has asked if I could circulate it to the wider club.

The survey is part of a broader project examining the activities of environmental NGOs in New Zealand and their ability to engage with the state. The research thus far has involved interviews with government officials and senior members of the environmental movement. The purpose of the survey is to complement this by developing an understanding of the form of activities undertaken with regard to environmental issues among younger people (students).

The link for the survey is: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/432895/Survey-of-Environmental-Participation. The survey will remain live until mid-March 2011. Any questions regarding the survey or the project can be directed to Dr. Thomas O'Brien at thomasanthonyobrien@gmail.com.
