Hello my friendly tramping folks,

This weeeeeeekend we are planning a incursion to the Kaimanawa Range. The range is located in central north Is.
It's a nice area if you are keen to go to a new Forest Park.

The plan is roughly... We leave here on Friday, drive the whole way there and camp. On Saturday, we cross the range to Waipakihi hut and stay there for the night. Some nice dinner and beverages (hint hint) should gratify us after a 8 hour (ish) walk over the range. On Sunday, the way back is via the river in a nice walk out through a gorgeous landscape.

Plz contact me if you are interested on coming.

desorder at gmail dot com

021 169 2007

Cheers.

AIC - Alpine Instruction Course 30/Jun-1/Jul

Hi All,

Our Alpine Instruction Course (AIC) is
going to be held 30/Jun-1/Jul. AIC is where we teach the basics of how to
tramp in winter and alpine conditions. We cover walking on snow, how
to use crampons and ice axe for walking in the mountains and how to self
arrest if you fall over in the snow.

If you are coming on the mid winter
trip, then you should come to AIC to learn the basics of how to handle
yourself in the mountains. Also open to those interested in winter
tramping, climbing or just having a good time! Limited places though so
be in quick.

To sign up to the trip please enter your details here http://vuwtc.org.nz/cs/content/TripSignUp.aspx and we will email you further info during the week before the trip.

We will meet at 5pm on Friday night at Hunter Carpark and come back on
Sunday night. On Friday we will camp at the bottom of Mt Ruapehu, while
on Saturday we will stay at the Auckland Tramping Club lodge. The cost of
the trip is $70.

There is no fitness level required for this trip as we will remain on
the ski field. While being an instructional weekend, it is also one of
the more social trips of the year.

Gear required:

Your normal tramping gear, over trousers, gloves, sunglasses, helmet,
tramping boots with stiff soles (required for crampons), make sure you
have plenty of warm clothing as there will be some standing around
during instruction.

Tramping club will be providing ice axes and crampoms for the weekend and we have space constrainsts so if you are planning to come, please let us know as soon as possible. :)

Gear List: http://vuwtc.org.nz/cs/content/gear.aspx

For any questions, please post a reply to this forum or contact me @ desorder at gmail dot com or turn up to one of the regular Tuesday meetings at the Welsh Dragon Bar, between Kent and Cambridge Terraces.

Thanks,

When tramping, my recipes are the
same, mince and mashed potatoes, sausage and mashed potatoes, steak and
mashed potatoes.

Mashed potatoes come in instant packs and it's quick
to make. Add butter, hot water and milk power... voila... the dinner is
ready.

However, for a gourmet recipe, we don't need a lot but creativity.

Think about everything you can use to make an easy recipe... Couscous, rice, seasonings of all types, sauces.
Now think what you can do easily and quickly.
Couscous with some spices, tuna with a nice sauce.
Or maybe, we could try a non-oven version of shepards pie.
Sausage cassarole, so we can use those pre cooked sausage and short the cooking time.

Vegetarian?!? Heaps SE Asia dishes... Have a look at the nepali recipes or indian recipes.

The gourmet trip is more than a tramping trip, it's a group exercise...
Start a discussion with your group about what the group can prepare.
Be creative. Believe me, it's a lot of fun. :)

Bushcraft I (28-29 Apr)

Hello all,

This weekend, we are going to run Bushcraft.

The plan is to go to Otaki raod end, set a camp site 30 minutes walking form the carpark and learn and practice some bushcraft skills.

This weekend, we will be focusing on Navigation but some other skill will be covered such as river traveling and how to sort flys.

We are leaving Wellington on Saturday morning and heading off to Otaki.
During the afternoon, we will be learning about some bushcraft skills and practicing them.
We will be fly camping on Saturday night.
On Sunday, we are going for a walk around the area to practice some of the skills showed and heading back to Welly.
