Day trip this weekend - Eastbourne

This weekend I will be leading a day trip in Tonga, we will leave Nuku'alofa wharf at 10am for a short boat trip out to Pangiamotu island where we will spend the day snorkling. We should be back by 5pm.

Anyone that is keen for a day trip a little closer to home should contact Sarah: milsa689@xtra.co.nz. The plan at this stage is to meet a the hunter carpark at 9am on Sunday and head to Eastbourne and Dry Creek. This will be an easy - to medium-easy trip suitable for all abilities. Contact Sarah for specific and confirmed details and let her know if you have a car. Don't forget your lunch, some warm clothes and a raincoat (and head torch - just in case).

Wellington Circus Festival

Hey,

Waitangi park has been turned into a circus fair ground with heaps of performances and stuff happening. The Navigators is a really awesome show put on by a local group and are well worth seeing with a mix of acrobatics, aerials and theatre. Even better, they are a busking show so you get to decide how much to pay at the end of the show.

Yes there really is free chocolate up for grabs.

Every year we leave hundreds of drawings of our logo in hut books around the country as a record of our passing. This year we intend to start close to home and include the logo on our posters and membership cards, and we need your help. We need you to take 5 minutes (or 30 if you're looking for a reason to procrastinate...) to sketch our logo and send it in, or take it to the meeting tonight.

The best entry will be rewarded with chocolate and the glory of having their artwork displayed around the university.

Dorset Ridge this weekend

This weekend there is a trip going to Dorset Ridge in the northern Tararuas. The plan at this stage is to leave Wellington on Friday night and possibly include a bit of river travel if the weather gods are nice to us.

We're still looking for flatmates so if you're looking for a flat this could be the ideal place. The place gets heaps of sun and great views and at just $120 for a double room it's a good bargain. It's only 20 minutes walk to town and the place has a really nice lounge and dining/kitchen area.

High Ridge Tramp

Jess wanted goblin forest, Kieran wanted something not too strenuous and I just wanted to get into the hills. It sounded like a recipe for a nice chilled-out weekend. But then again, Kieran was looking at new red lines and the weather gods were intent on proving that October is still winter...

So on Friday night as others headed to a farewell party we got rugged up and headed in to the new Atiwhakatu hut and possibly the first ever flat Friday night walk. And we were there shortly after 10, so it was even an early night. Saturday was a very lazy start as it was snowing when we woke up and we only had a short day. The trip past Mountain House to Totara flats was pleasant and uneventful, with a bit of light snow falling as we crossed Pig Flats.

Sunday morning dawned sunny and clear and we were out of the hut by 9, heading back across the bridge. Just past the bridge we turned off the track and headed up the spur to High Ridge and we were pleasantly surprised at the level of ground trail and old markers on the trees. Two and a half hours later we were at the Totara Flats signpost (seemingly in the middle of nowhere), and into the snow. The goblin forest began and Jess was happy. Unfortunately, following the relatively flat broad High Ridge with 15cm of snow on the ground and sporadic markers proved to be somewhat slower than the trip up the spur and our merry little group got quieter and quieter. With the sun shining brightly it felt like we were caught up in the Narnia thaw as the snow in the trees melted, and with full rain gear on we were wetter than on Friday night. As we got higher the trees got shorter and gnarlier until we were fighting our way through. The goblin forest was not so cool at this point, especially when the goblins dumped snowballs on us.

We finally broke free of the bush and traded the dripping trees for Tararua gales. Standing up proved to be a challenge at times and waiting for the ‘gust’ to pass was as fruitful as watching the grass grow. So we plodded through the foot of fresh snow asbest we could, occasionally sinking in to waist-deep and leaving a few bum prints along the way. Appreciating the view required stopping, bracing and quickly glancing around before resuming the forward progress to avoid hypothermia.

Reaching the main track (and other peoples footprints) was a major relief and cause for a much needed group hug before heading down to Powell hut and away from the knife edge ridge. A very quick stop at Powell for Kieran to regain the feeling in his feet and then it was a charge down the hill on autopilot for a 5.30pm lunch at the car park and very quiet drive home.
