Hey all you people who do know me,

I had to hand in my work mobile today - so not point any texting or ringing me on that now to say how much you love me. My ph at home (until I leave on Wednesday) is 977 8632, and make sure to not use my old work email but sophallen@hotmail.com instead from now on.

Also, If anyone has any photos of me of anything else interesting .eg. people and places I know, I would be keen to copy photos onto my memory stick at the meeting this Tuesday- if you are feeling generous.....bring along your photos for the salvation of Sophie's memory.

R U in the European Alps July/August?

Alps anyone?

I'm leaving for Italy in a few days, where I will have some time to hike around the Alps in July/August (French, Italian, Austrian...Swiss I'm not fussy and haven't planned anything. Will you also be hanging around there then and would like to meet up with me? (Richie and Hannah I know already will be around there then). Does anyone have German Mattias (the infamous chocolate cake baker's) email? He will be up to mischief around there I'm sure. My email is sophallen@hotmail.com to let me know.

Soph’s Triple Party Bonanza

This Friday night (the 23^rd May) I’ll be having a party or three to celebrate my imminent departure from Wellington for the sunny shores of Italy and Norway.

I couldn’t quite decide what kind of party to have……. so I’m having three parties rolled into one:

Pot Luck. Friday 6 30pm. For quiet, respectable, people who turn up on time, want to drink tea, gossip, and maybe get home to bed early, and not damage anything in my sister’s house where I am living 27 Happy Valley Rd, Owhiro Bay. RVSP if you can be bothered.

Party party. 9 30pm onwards. For people who like drinking, dancing all crazy and singing, hanging out around my sister’s house (but not breaking anything or making a mess). Everyone welcome. Also at 27 Happy Valley Rd, Owhiro Bay.

Chill out on beach. 11 30pm-ish for a few hours. For the hippies or pyromaniacs who like toasting marshmallows. People who like breaking stuff and making a mess are also welcome to come to this party. Naked swimming and fire poi encouraged. Bring really warm clothes and blankets, head torches, candles, things to burn (car tyres, marshmallows, bananas in tinfoil). This will be on the first beach next to the Red Rocks carpark (at the end of Owhiro Bay Parade). But we will just stay at my house if it is yuck weather. Everyone and all their friends are welcome.

So decide which party category you fit into and turn up. It may be more of a continuum, with the night getting gradually more debaucherous.

Downtown Eco-Therapy is for you! Just turn up at Midland Park on Wednesday 23 April between 12 and 1.30pm to pot some native seedlings,

(Will be postponed to 24 April if the weather is no good).

Hey -we have a space or two in a a PADI open water course this weekend and next weekend, the 19th-20th April, then 26th-27th April. It is discounted quite a bit (from the usual $425) to $305 with your own wetsuit/mask/fins, or $345 if you need to rent the gear.

Have you been thinking of doing a PADI open water SCUBA course? Great -I need you!

It lets you SCUBA dive in open water down to 18m - great for holidays to tropical places, or exploring Wellington's south coast.

I am trying to organise a private course with New Zealand Sea Adventures www.scubadiving.co.nz/ so that I can fit it in before I leave New Zealand in May. Annabel the Awesome (Not Annabel the Smelly who some of you may have met) is keen too.

The course is two full weekends - the 19th-20th April, then 26th-27th April. It costs $425 usually for everything provided(which is the cheapest in Wellington -as it also includes the hire of mask, fins, gloves etc which other courses don't) But it doesn't give you free diving on weekend afterward -just a discount.

If you have some snorkel gear already then it is cheaper -and the more people we get the cheaper will get too. Plus you will get to enjoy hanging out with other members of the tramping club

Practical, organised and unflappable, you'll have what it takes to work in the most challenging climate on Earth - enabling us to conduct successful scientiffic research across Antarctica.

Excellent mountaineering skills are essential, as is the ability to effectively lead expeditions. You must also be a natural problem solver and a strong team player who can respond effectively to ever-changing situations.

Your core task will be to conduct scientific colleagues safely and efficiently within the polar environment on both the continental ice shelves and glaciated mountains. Of course, you'll also have to attend to many other duties, including assisting in scientific work, organising camp sites, handling radio equipment and ensuring sno-mobiles continue to work.

Qualifications: As you would expect, this unique role demands a range of skills.
Excellent mountaineering skills are essential, as is the ability to effectively lead expeditions. You must also be a natural problem solver and be a strong team player who can respond effectively to ever-changing situations.

Duration: 9 or 18 months

Salary: Salary package will be from £21,689 per annum pro-rata plus a possible performance bonus when your return to the UK.

70's Chocolate Fun-do (Fondue) - Oxfam Trailwalker Fundraiser

Sunday the 24th Feb. 7pm (turn up round then or miss out on the fun-do)

26 Ellora St, Ngaio, Wellington (out in the 'burbs). Walk, Carpool, take bus 43 or 44, or train to Ngaio Station then walk 10 mins from there...but get a map!

The Deal: I will provide the chocolate sauce. You guys will bring the stuff to dip......and/or some money as a donation to my Oxfam Trailwalker team or donate online (see below). I'll have an Italian staying with me who I don't know- So be nice to him!

DIPPER IDEAS: Apple, nectarine, banana, turkish delight, marshmallows, dried apricots, lollies, scorched almonds (good, but hard to get on the fork), white chocolate chunks, BE INVENTIVE

The Theme: Raging Hippy, tree-hugging hippy, band groupie, discoqueen, pornstar, pyschdelic drugie, Vietnam war veteran, - Dress up in whatever the decade of the 70's means to you- when fondue was a raging trend.

The Fundraising Bit: My team, the mighty Mountain Mules (with my sister and her husband) are going to be walking and jogging the 100km in Taupo in April for the Oxfam Trailwalker. To help with the excrutiating suffering of our feet after the event, we need to know that our pain has helped raised funds for depressed Conglese orphans with leprosy, syphilis and that have no feet....... well, maybe helped build some water wells anyway!

We are obviously not as cool as Team Blue (Timmy, Sarah, Kit) who have already scabbed you for money for this good cause, but that just means we have to beg that little bit harder. Heya all VUWTCers...I'm part of the Vic Uni Env group called GECKO organising this great big amazing thingy thats on this Saturday. Free entertainment in the sun guaranteed and hopefully get people thinking about action against climate change.

If you want to see the Climate Change Documentary THE 11th HOUR (yes the Leonard Dicarpio one) we will having screenings at the Film Archive Sat evening for $15 a ticket

Climate Action Festival – Civic Square Dec 8th, 12-7pm.......be there or be square

The International Day of Action on Climate Change will kick off in style with the Climate Action Festival this Saturday (December 8) from midday at Wellington’s Civic Square and City Gallery Cinema.

Civic Square will be alive with activity and entertainment; there will be live music including the Wellington Community Choir and the Ukulele Orchestra, speakers, children’s activities, interactive stalls, prize give-aways, food and more.

People will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to view Leonardo Dicaprio’s critically acclaimed film: The 11th Hour.

Saturday December the 8th is International Day of Action on Climate Change. It is a day to raise awareness of climate change, and call on world leaders to take urgent action. It coincides with the United Nations Climate talks to be held in Bali, Indonesia this year from December 3rd to 14th. Over 83 countries will be participating in this campaign. Due to New Zealand's location on the globe, we are the first country in the world to acknowledge this day.

Festival spokesperson Benjamin Beer says “This festival is an opportunity for all Wellingtonians to get actively involved in reducing their carbon footprint. We aim to bring communities and individuals together to share ideas and be able to learn more about Climate Change. People are free to come and go, listen, absorb and participate in the activities as much as they want.”

This event is being organised by volunteers from Victoria University of Wellington’s environmental group – Gecko. “We are predominantly comprised of students and ex-students as well as other volunteers who are concerned about the environment, concerned about climate change, concerned about humanity. We understand that Climate Change is the greatest challenge of our time - possibly the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. However we are not going to bury our heads in the sand” says Benjamin.
