New Constitution

Hey all,

As mentioned at the meeting we are currently in the process of rewriting our constitution so that we can become an incorporated society.

Take a look at our draft constitution here and submit any suggestions/corrections/improvements to us by next Monday 7 October.

These will form the rules governing how our club works going forward, so are pretty important! Feedback to myself (patonomatic@gmail.com), Emma (bemmakiwi@hotmail.com) or Anita (anita_bonita_banana_eater@hotmail.com) or comment on our facebook page if you want wider discussion.

The process from here will be for us to collate any feedback received and present a final copy of our proposed new constitution at the meeting next Tuesday 8 October, 7 days in advance as required by our current constitution. Then we will formally vote on accepting it and on becoming an incorporated society at the AGM on 15 October, with a 2/3 majority of those present required to vote yes in order to replace our current constitution.

More details on the benefits of incorporation can be found on the societies website which might help explain the impetus for making this move to incorporation. The reason we have not done this previously is that we used to affiliate to VUWSA who were incorporated, and as our 'umbrella' organisation these benefits flowed through to us. Now with VSM (Voluntary Student Membership), VUWSA affiliation is no longer an option for us so we really need to become incorporated ourselves to gain these benefits.

For reference our existing constitution from 2002 can be found here - given it referenced VUWSA affiliation in several clauses, it is pretty much invalid now and needs replacing anyway!

Ruahines trip 19-21 April!

Hey all, myself (Kieran) and Craig are running the club trip this weekend to the Ruahine Ranges. This is the next range north of the Tararuas, and in general is a bit more wild, rugged and adventurous - so more fun in other words!

Having said that we'll be trying to arrange groups to suit all levels, so there can be everything from a relaxed walk into a hut and out again on the tracks, to a full on keen trip across open mountain tops and down untracked rivers to get to some of the remoter parts (like Lake Colenso perhaps). Indicate your level of fitness/tramping experience on the sign up form appropriately - we'll go over these again at the meeting.

The exact routes will be a bit dependent on weather, but there's lots of options and plenty of cool little huts to aim for.

Since its a bit of a drive, we'll try and get away promptly on Friday evening at 5.30pm and we will be returning late on Sunday.

Could be tempted to try it this weekend as the weather is looking good... it'd be an overnight trip leaving Saturday morning, let me know at the meeting tonight or by email if you reckon you're keen for it! Cheers.

Tubing the Waiohine

So, I'm down on the summer calendar to organise a tubing trip down the Waiohine this weekend - I'm still very keen to run the trip at some stage, but am away down south this weekend and next, so will reschedule to a fine weekend in February!

The stretch I'm particularly interested in is an isolated bit of gorge between Mid Waiohine and Totara Flats. Some tubing/river experience would be helpful, as would a wetsuit. If you're interested let me know at patonomatic@gmail.com, and I'll send round an email in February before whichever weekend looks good!

Hey people,

it looks like our hosting provider for the website changed some settings for their email server a while back (without telling us), which broke all the notification emails on our website news/forums etc. I've updated the site with the change and it should be all working now - so hopefully you get this email :)

Rough plan is Penn Creek friday night, and a loop onto the tops via Vosseler and Bridge Peak returning to Wellington Saturday afternoon.

Tubing from Penn Creek

Hi all, if anyone's keen to go tubing from Penn Creek down to Otaki Forks this weekend, let me know at the meeting tonight so I can sort out some tubes. You would need to bring your own wetsuit (or hire one from a local dive shop). Prior tubing experience not a necessity, but it helps if you're fairly comfortable in the water.

It's a bit of a walk in to the hut (about 4 hours) so I might aim to head in there Friday night (or at least up to Field), and then tube back down on Saturday and back to Wellington Saturday afternoon/evening.

Let me know if you're keen! Weather looks fantastic at this stage :)

Ruahine tramping this weekend?

Hey guys, is anyone up for a tramp this weekend? I could be keen to get into the eastern Ruahines (as per the calendar), a relatively easy trip into Awatere, Happy Daze, Makaretu and Longview huts (or possibly a bigger loop to Leon Kinvig/Top Gorge if people were keen and weather good).
