New Constitution

Hey all,

As mentioned at the meeting we are currently in the process of rewriting our constitution so that we can become an incorporated society.

Take a look at our draft constitution here and submit any suggestions/corrections/improvements to us by next Monday 7 October.

These will form the rules governing how our club works going forward, so are pretty important! Feedback to myself (patonomatic@gmail.com), Emma (bemmakiwi@hotmail.com) or Anita (anita_bonita_banana_eater@hotmail.com) or comment on our facebook page if you want wider discussion.

The process from here will be for us to collate any feedback received and present a final copy of our proposed new constitution at the meeting next Tuesday 8 October, 7 days in advance as required by our current constitution. Then we will formally vote on accepting it and on becoming an incorporated society at the AGM on 15 October, with a 2/3 majority of those present required to vote yes in order to replace our current constitution.

More details on the benefits of incorporation can be found on the societies website which might help explain the impetus for making this move to incorporation. The reason we have not done this previously is that we used to affiliate to VUWSA who were incorporated, and as our 'umbrella' organisation these benefits flowed through to us. Now with VSM (Voluntary Student Membership), VUWSA affiliation is no longer an option for us so we really need to become incorporated ourselves to gain these benefits.

For reference our existing constitution from 2002 can be found here - given it referenced VUWSA affiliation in several clauses, it is pretty much invalid now and needs replacing anyway!

the club logo's history

Hi there!

Yesterday I borrowed the book "Tararua:The Story of a Mountain Range by Chris MacLean" from the Wellington City Library - and this is what I read on page 223:

"This advertisement appeared regularly in Tararua Club magazines in the years after the war. Later the symbol of a goat or sheep on top of a mountain was adopted by the Victoria University Tramping Club as their unofficial logo."

Hi all,

Next weeks meeting is the most important one of the year.

We have our AGM this coming Tuesday the 23rd of October. This stands for Annual General Meeting and it is when the club committee reports back on the activity of the club over the past year, gives a summary of accounts, presents the budget for the next year and discusses any other general club business that needs discussing. Most importantly, this meeting is where we elect the members of the committee for next year.

If you have been thinking about running for a role on the committee you can read a brief description of each role then see here. If you would like to know more about a particular role feel free to email questions through to the current committee members.

We will have pizza and snacks before the meeting from around 7pm, and start the meeting at 7:30pm.The meeting is in the usual rooms SU 217 and 218.

If you haven't been to a meeting in awhile then this is a good one to come along to.

Look forward to seeing you there :)

FYI: 10% off great walk fees with FMC card

Hi there!

While researching my November Stay on the South Island, I've learnt that we get 10% off the ****ing expensive huts,campsites on the great walks.

BUT you need to book at a DOC office so they can check the FMC membership(*).

The club committee are in the process of developing and producing a club t-shirt.

We are going to start with a design competition. If you have any cool ideas/designs email them through to sacha-parker@hotmail.com by the 7th of August (in 2 weeks time). We will then show the designs at a meeting where you can vote and give feedback. Once we have the design finalised and an idea of numbers we'll be able to give an idea of cost and take the design to a printing company.

So if you have any ideas/designs send them though!

Its clubs week next week and we need volunteers to help out on the stall, promote the club and get lots of new members along!

Come in your tramping/climbing gear if you can. We hope to set up a table traverse so it would be great to have some demonstrators for that too.

Monorail Fiordland anyone?

So there are two things DoC are considering:

· Grant concessions to Milford Dart Limited to investigate, construct, operate and maintain a bus tunnel from the Routeburn Road in Mt Aspiring National Park to the Hollyford Road in Fiordland National Park.

· Grant concessions to Riverstone Holdings Limited to construct, operate and maintain a monorail and associated construction /mountain bike track through the Snowdon Forest Conservation Area, and associated terminus facilities on marginal strip alongside the Mararoa River, and Fiordland National Park (Te Anau Downs).

Also, its possible this contravenes NZs responsibilities under the World Heritage Convention as the area is in Te Wahiponamu WHS...

Denniston Plateau Mining plans

Ask John Key to keep his government's promise about mining our conservation land

This week the new government signalled that mining on public conservation land is again on its agenda. It has broken the promise made last year to give all New Zealanders a say about significant mining projects on conservation land.

On Monday, Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson sent a letter to Forest & Bird saying the government will not publicly notify the access arrangement for a planned 160-hectare open-cast coal mine on the Denniston Plateau. This would allow all New Zealanders to have a say on whether the mine should go ahead.

The Denniston Plateau is an extraordinary and wild part of New Zealand, with a unique ecosystem that is home to great spotted kiwi, kaka, West Coast geckos, giant land snails, bonsai rata and many other special plants and animals.

it would be great to get some newer members/ non committee members leading/ co-leading/ organising a few trips this year. If anyone had any ideas for locations, activities, novel adventure ideas or link-ups, maybe along the lines of hut bagging, peak bagging, track linking, bushcraft, bushparty etc. as well as normal weekend, day or mid week trips please get in contact with anyone on the committee and float your idea,

Gottlieb-Erica Alpine Scholarship for Aspiring Women Alpinists

To celebrate the life and climbs of Erica Beuzenberg and Gottlieb Braun-Elwert, the Erica-Gottlieb Trust wish to contribute a financial scholarship towards the alpine instruction of an aspiring young women climber.

To apply, you must be female, under thirty years old and passionate about mountaineering. The scholarship is available to NZAC members and non-members.

Does this sound like anyone in the club? i can think of a few, anyone who came on the AICs, has a good tramping or climbing background and lives in NZ and is keen to learn and get out there. What im thinking is that a formal, guided course would be a great way to get you the skills to climb some grade 3 (and beyond!) summits like Aspiring, Cook, Malte Brun, Elie de Beuamont, Minarets etc. And if you're into it, some pitched grade 5ish stuff next winter with me!

The club has traditionally pushed out one or two first class Alpinists a year and if you want to be the next Terra then this is for you!
