FIRST VIC IDS MEETING FOR 2009!!
MONDAY 9 MARCH, 5:00PM, CO304
This will be the first Vic IDS meeting for the year. Come one, come all- old or new- all are welcome! This will be a preliminary meeting so that:

Everyone can get to know each other
All new members can get a better idea of what Vic IDS does
Everyone can get a broad idea of what Vic IDS is doing throughout the year
You get an idea of where you can help and get involved - if you want to!
We can organise sign-ups for the core committee - all welcome!

Augmenting the evening, there will also be delicious fairtrade tea and coffee!

We will also have a DVD screening of:

"Silent Killer: The Unfinished Campaign Against Hunger"
Silent Killer shows us the face and causes of hunger around the world. But it doesn't stop there. It shows what is being done and what can be done to end hunger forever, if we have the will.

After the DVD screening we will hold a committee meeting for all committee members.

BURNING ISSUES: CLIMATE CHANGE, SCIENCE AND RELIGION

In this seminar Bob White will present the scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change, and will offer a theological and ethical analysis suggesting why Christians and other religious believers should take climate change seriously in their faith and practice.

Professor Bob White is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Geophysics at Cambridge. He is also an Associate Director of the Faraday Institute (www.faraday-institute.org), a centre that investigates the interface between science and theology.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight targets that, if achieved, would greatly reduce poverty across the planet. They are the product of a remarkable international consensus: 189 governments pledged at the Millennium Summit in 2000 to ‘free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanising conditions of extreme poverty’.

The aim is to meet the MDGs by 2015. Now, in 2009, we have passed the half-way mark. This symposium will explore what progress has been made, both globally and in the Pacific, towards achieving the MDGs.

Keynote Speakers: Salil Shetty, Director of UN Millennium Campaign; Professor Paul Collier, Professor of Economics, Oxford University

Some of you know me I'm James Barber (a newish face in wellington "activism")

I'm emailing you because I think you'd be interested in the NZ Camp for Climate Action.

This is an effort to start a peoples' movement to address the root causes of Climate change. Whilst we are working towards a camp in December we are also working towards a smaller camp this April 24-26 at Parihaka.

The goal is to have lots of fun discussions on organising, talks from scientists-activists and workshops from flax weaving to protesting.

Wellington meetings to discuss how we can help get this off the ground and happening are reconvening on Monday the 16th of March at 5.30pm.

Directions:
By bus from Central City, you can catch the # 23 Bus (Houghton Bay/Southgate) departing Lambton Quay at approx. 16:21 and arriving about 5 minutes down the hill from Truby King House at 16:40.

From Central Wellington, head south along Adelaide Rd and then Riddiford St, past the Hospital and the Newtown shops. At the roundabout at the top end of Newtown, take Mansfield St, and head towards the Zoo. Past the Zoo entrance, continue on up Manchester Street to the top of the Melrose hill. Manchester Terrace is near the crest of the hill on the left with a Wellington City Council sign at the intersection saying "Truby King Park". Do not turn sharp left, but drive up under the first archway that says "Karitane". At the next junction keep right, (there is a second archway and Karitane Products Factory on the left.) At the next junction keep left (there is a brick stair and 3 narrow driveways) and continue up the hill passing the brick pillars to the top. Above you to the right you will see large brick archways and the single storey white weatherboard house. Continue up to the parking area that is the beginning of the town belt. Walk up the welcoming curved steps along the East side of the parking area to the House enjoying the view of the Airport, Cook Straight, and Evans Bay. The entrance is on the long East verandah.
