Four hours to make a real difference in the world

eDay is a community based initiative designed to raise awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic waste (e-waste) and to provide a safe and accessible venue for households to dispose of old computer equipment and mobile phones.

Last year 2,243 cars drove through the stadium carpark dropping off 150 tonnes of equipment in Wellington (after final weights were taken). At least 95% of this was diverted from landfill and either re-used or recycled in a fully accredited environmentally sustainable way. This year we are expecting even greater volumes as the understanding and popularity of this event grows.

Organised nationally by the Computer Access NZ trust (CANZ), the website www.eday.org.nz will be updated with information for this years eDay to be held on Saturday 4th October in Wellington. This provides an opportunity to highlight information on the problem of e-waste and map out ways to reduce the impact on our environment. CANZ are the national steering committee and are also embarking on nationwide media advertising and communications campaign to further raise awareness of the issues.

On a local level, we are able to have a free eDay in Wellington through collaborative efforts of local volunteers, businesses and the City Council. A key need for us is volunteers to work on the day (4 hours either in the morning, afternoon or after the event). The tasks include taking the equipment out of people's cars, carrying out surveys, traffic management and stacking equipment for transport. We have a health and safety plan and will provide training before hand and/or on the day depending on tasks. In return for your valued time and effort , we will provide free lunch and refreshments for all volunteers.

Your support will help make this event even more successful than last year, and help Wellington's eDay towards our goal of being recognised by the Guiness World Records as the biggest of any of these events in the world. Last year the Wellington eDay collected almost half of the equpiment that was taken nationally.
