Mourning for Maui's Dolphins

Care for the Wild International will lay a wreath on the steps of Parliament to focus attention on the plight of New Zealand's critically endangered Maui's dolphins.

Ninety percent of Maui's dolphins have already died, primarily as a result of fishing. With just 111 surviving individuals, Maui's dolphins are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Red List of Endangered Species and face "an extremely high risk of extinction in the immediate future".

The world recently watched as China did nothing and the Yangtze River dolphin became extinct. Unless the New Zealand Government takes strong action now, Maui's dolphins too will soon be irretrievably lost to the world.

The Government will shortly announce its decision on the Hector's & Maui's Dolphin Threat Management Plan. This decision is critical for the species' survival and will have far-reaching implications for New Zealand's international standing as a credible, environmentally sustainable nation and a reputable tourism destination.

Show your support for the most endangered dolphin on earth before it's too late. Join with us for a peaceful vigil and to ask the New Zealand Government to do the right thing and protect and Maui's and Hector's dolphins against extinction.
