in the frequent poor visibility. Indeed pioneer aviators, Hood and
Moncrieff were thought by some to have crashed in the Tararuas. During
World War II and since, several aircraft on training or navigation
exercises were lost, some re-discovered in quite recent years, and
others yet to be found.

Anderson-Memorial Hut is named after a pilot: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~fiski/nzhuts/nzhuts1.html#anderson-memorial

I know of three crash sites:

At Angle Knob (the most famous one), the aluminium structure is visible from many places in the southern Tararuas.
Have a look at Pia's trip report at http://vuwtc.org.nz/cs/forums/thread/6280.aspx
After a short period of absence, it it is there again... http://www.windy.gen.nz/index.php/archives/313
It is also a geo-cache

At the east slope of Maungahuka a tigermoth plane crashed in the 1940s. I've seen location details floating around in Maungahuka Hut, but wasn't there. For a picture see http://www.nzdeercullers.org.nz/Details1.aspx?PartNumber=8304953

And finally I've spotted a wreck on the Tararua Recreation Map (003 438) close to Mick (off from Otaki), 200W of 698
see Tararua Footprints 15.1 http://www.ttc.org.nz/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TararuaFootprints/WaitohuValley

A Forest&Bird Group Newsletter counts 12 sites, see page 3 of http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/files/publication_attachments/July_2010_2.pdf

There are plenty of reasons for going into the mountains - let's go!

not with bushcraft :-)

Hi guys!

Have a look at that story!
http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wairarapa/8540717/Hunter-survives-tiger-country

Bushcraft last weekend provided some good advice how to prevent such epic walkouts:

Always remember the most extreme emergency procedure DSP: Drop your Pack, Spread Out and Panic!
(Mountain Safety Manual, section 'Lost!': [...] 'stop, have something to eat and drink' [...] 'consider your position carefully and rationally')
Carry more than one compass and map in a group. VUWSA want me to let you all know that the wonderful group Sustainable Coastlines is running a bit of an event in Wellington between the 8th and 13th of December. If anyone's keen to generate some warm fuzzies you can go along and help out. They're looking for people to:
- volunteer their time to come and help pick up rubbish on either Thursday 8 or Saturday 10 December.
- help lead a group of school students on Thursday 8 December
- manage an 'event station' on Saturday 10 December
- assist in auditing the rubbish collected on either Mon 12th or Tues 13th of December (or both). You would learn how to run a rubbish audit and collate data to present to the community to obtain invaluable resources for ongoing educational work.

Email me if you're keen and I'll give you some more info!

Cheers,
Eleanor
Doing a avalanche rescues practice some friends found out a very
important fact: Ipods can interfere with your ability to use a avalanche
beacon. So if your partner is caught in an avalanche turn off your Ipod
or mp3 player before you start searching for them! Would be worth
seeing if cell phones affect beacons. None of us new this, so we thought
is was worth passing on!

Harness for sale

Hey I have just bought myself a new harness, so I have a well loved Black Diamond Primrose, size medium for sale. $40 ONO

Has served me well!

Sorry I don't have a phone, so please just reply to this message.

thanks,

Terra :)

Good deal on Bag... :)

http://www.1-day.co.nz/sale/kelty/p/

They are cheap and should last while you're around.

Buy one and come tramping to destroy it... :D

Good deal for boots.

http://www.1-day.co.nz/products/W3GACN1GS

Good deal for those without boots.

be quick...

FREE TV!!!

Hey, I have a TV to give away.
