air plane crashs in the Tararuas

Hi there!

On bush-craft I was asked how many aircraft wrecks were in the Tararuas...

Quoting the Tararua footprints:

A number of plane crashes have occurred in the Tararua Ranges, generally in the frequent poor visibility. Indeed pioneer aviators, Hood and Moncrieff were thought by some to have crashed in the Tararuas. During World War II and since, several aircraft on training or navigation exercises were lost, some re-discovered in quite recent years, and others yet to be found.

I know of three crash sites:

At Angle Knob (the most famous one), the aluminium structure is visible from many places in the southern Tararuas.

It is also a geo-cache
At the east slope of Maungahuka a tigermoth plane crashed in the 1940s. I've seen location details floating around in Maungahuka Hut, but wasn't there. For a picture see http://www.nzdeercullers.org.nz/Details1.aspx?PartNumber=8304953
And finally I've spotted a wreck on the Tararua Recreation Map (003 438) close to Mick (off from Otaki), 200W of 698

Bushcraft last weekend provided some good advice how to prevent such epic walkouts:

Always remember the most extreme emergency procedure DSP: Drop your Pack, Spread Out and Panic!
(Mountain Safety Manual, section 'Lost!': [...] 'stop, have something to eat and drink' [...] 'consider your position carefully and rationally')
Carry more than one compass and map in a group. The bushcraft people now know how to use them.
Have fresh or spare batteries for your torch and a spare meal.
Leave your (updated) intentions in a hut book, with people.

There are four PLBs (personal locator beacons) in the gear shed. Take them for club trips .

In the end/emergency: NZ is a great place for tramping, they (SAR) will try hard to find you!

Sleeping bag

If you went on the Mid-Winter Christmas trip in the weekend and left your sleeping bag at Mitre Flats Hut it was carried out and is now being safely looked after. Come along to the meeting on Tuesday if you would like it back. I would also be interested to hear how you managed to forget it and not realise, seeing as sleeping bags can usually take up a decent percentage of space in a pack :)

Mitre Flats, Totara Flats and Tutuwai Huts - Gas cooking facility removal. Due to health and safety and economic reasons, the gas facilities at these huts will be permanently removed. This will occur, weather permitting, between the 20th and 31st August 2012.
The Department of Conservation will continue to supply firewood to the three huts, which will provide heating and also a cooking source via the woodstoves installed. The three huts will remain listed as 'serviced' huts.

Hey Dudes, VUWSA want me to let you all know that the wonderful group Sustainable Coastlines is running a bit of an event in Wellington between the 8th and 13th of December. If anyone's keen to generate some warm fuzzies you can go along and help out. They're looking for people to: - volunteer their time to come and help pick up rubbish on either Thursday 8 or Saturday 10 December. - help lead a group of school students on Thursday 8 December - manage an 'event station' on Saturday 10 December - assist in auditing the rubbish collected on either Mon 12th or Tues 13th of December (or both). You would learn how to run a rubbish audit and collate data to present to the community to obtain invaluable resources for ongoing educational work. Next week's meeting will be the clubs AGM. This is the time that we elect a new committee for the coming year! If you think you might be interested in being on the committee there's a list of position descriptions here:

Being on the committee is not as hard as you might think, with 13 odd people it's pretty easy to split up the work and it looks good for cvs and scholarship applications!

It's super important to get as many people to come along as possible, even if you're not thinking of being on the committee as your vote does count! So take a break from study, come elect a new committee and then enjoy the biggest taco tuesday of the year!

The meeting will be in SU216/217 on Tuesday 18th October at 7.30pm.(same place/time as normal). There'll be a few snacks as well:)

Warning: Ipods interfere with avalanche beacons

Doing a avalanche rescues practice some friends found out a very important fact: Ipods can interfere with your ability to use a avalanche beacon. So if your partner is caught in an avalanche turn off your Ipod or mp3 player before you start searching for them! Would be worth seeing if cell phones affect beacons. None of us new this, so we thought is was worth passing on!
