A online Map is here - that will answer your questions on altitude and distance
(map reading will be a big topic on bush craft.)

Tarn Ridge Hut (1 ticket each): DOC description, Photo on VUWTC site
This dunny has the most beautiful view! More images here.

Another Ticket for Blue Range Hut (e.g see Dom's trip report)
Or just buy a hut pass (see discounts here).

Fuel/Transport Costs: about 20 NZD

Trip idea 1 (medium easy/medium):

Saturday: start early morning (pick up 8AM latest).
Drive to Masterton/Upper Plain road/The Pines
Walk to Mitre Flats Hut, have lunch/swim
Get up to Mitre (that's a climb!), get over Girdlestone to Tarn Ridge Hut
Have dinner, spend night there (meet the other group).

Sunday: Tramp over Three Kings (funny up and down!), Baldy (lunch)
Back to Mitre Flats (with a bush bash short cut (old track) or 'official' the track).
another break and swim... and finally back to the car.

This trip becomes truly medium easy when starting on Friday and going to Mitre Flats Hut (3 tickets) and Saturday over the Kings.

Trip idea 2 (medium fit/fit):

Friday: drive to Kirwhakapapa, tramp to Blue Range Hut

Saturday: Bush bash along Te Mare, Bruce Hill to Mitre Flats.
Up the Mid King Biv Spur (lunch somewhere there) to Mid-King Biv, (two of the) Three Kings to Tarn Ridge Hut.
Meet the other group.

Sunday: To Arete and via Bannister to Cow Saddle and out via Spur, Blue Range track
... or Pinnacle Spur/Arete Forks, Cow Creek Hut...

(For this trip I need some thinking about the Saturday/Sunday balance.)

Any questions?
Contact me at or ask me at the VUWTC meeting.
