Dear Bruce,

What colour snow to eat depends on your taste.

White snows:

Fluffy and white - Cool and refreshing with no taste except for oaky peaches I reccommend Ruapehu Estates "June 09" very drinkable today.

Dirty white - a gritty drop with moraine dust undertones and blackberries. Garden of Eden easter is a chewy drinker in this price range.

Pretty blue - hard deep winter ice, under pressure with smoky strawberry undertones. Nice to look at but difficult to drink 45m up a free standing pillar at Wye Creek.

Sickly green - hard ice. Aoraki summit 09 is a nice drinker with a slight hint of unwashed armpit over apricot sulfates.

Yellow Snows:

Light yellow - well hydrated lunch piss is a reasonable drinker which isn't too different from fluffy and white.

Medium yellow - tangy. More like a morning vintage outside a hut. Goes well with red meat and porcupines.

Dark Yellow - a rich drop, "I didn't drink all day cos my feet were cold" is one of my faves of this vintage. Well priced! Impress her!

Kinda orrange - Only the most robust of pallettes can handle this. "24hrs out without a drink bottle" is a well priced edition.

Red snow:

Glacier algae - kinda freaky this drop, leave it for your teenage kids or spouse if you're in the Rolling Stones.

Bit the ice-axe while falling - this is a salty drop with undercurrents of moluccan spices. Nice! But don't confuse with...

Carrol Hut toilet 04 - not a great drop.

I'm new to the club and have a couple of questions regarding the AIC...

1) What time are we meeting in the carpark?

2) I don't have a water bottle and I am contemplating just eating snow. What colours of snow are best for eating?

And on the subject of gear. The club will supply ice axes and crampons although if you have your own then you could bring them along.

We will also be wearing helmets when on the snow and ice and since we may not have enough club climbing helmets if you have a cycle helmet could you please bring it along.

You will also need eye protection against snow blindness such as snow goggles (sunglasses are fine). Sunscreen can also help.

And as we will be camping on Friday night if you have a tent you are welcome to bring it as it can be left at the hut or in the vans for the rest of the weekend.

We will be driving to the DOC campsite just outside Whakapapa village on Friday night, no walking required to get there. Then on Saturday morning we will be driving to the hut in Iwikau village on the Whakapapa ski field from where will instruct on the snow both days.

Any gear not needed for day trips from the hut can be left there. There won't be any tramping as such but all of the usual tramping gear will be needed.

Yes I have a few pairs. They are not completely waterproof though, but if you can't get anything else will be fine :)

Another reminder...

If you intend to come on AIC can you please please please come along next week to pay for the trip. We need to book beds in the hut so we need to have confirmed numbers.

This year AIC will cost $45 per person.

AIC is a great trip and a lot of fun, plus this represents good value for money as the club is subsidising the trip. We've had lots of sign ups already :)

Can you all please try to come along to the meeting next week to pay for the trip. Thanks.

If you want to sign up for AIC on the 26th - 28th June then please get in touch with me. AIC is an introductory snowcraft course which will teach you the basics of safe snow travel. It's a good social weekend that is usually a lot of fun.

You can sign up at our meetings (Tuesday 7:30 pm, Welsh Dragon) or email me with the usual details (name, email, phone, car, vege).
