Mokihinui Dam proposal & other Wild Rivers WRAP

    Hi everyone!

READ MSG BELOW and see what Meridian has planned for another of our rivers...we're having one of our tramping club FMC reps coming to talk about it at the next meeting...should be great!

Also if you're really interested there's a spread about the Mokihinui proposal in the latest Forest & Bird magazine...

    Amelia

    Hullo there

You may be aware Meridian Energy has a proposal to dam the Mokihinui River. .

Wild Rivers Action Project has been formed to oppose the Mokihinui hydro-electric scheme applied for by Meridian Energy, and to protect the remaining wild rivers of New Zealand from development.

WRAP has been undertaken by members of Nelson Tramping Club with support from several members of
    FMC Executive.

Please visit the website www.wrap.org.nz, there is lots of information, links to photos, video, other involved organisations. Please sign the petition.

WRAP is not a FMC initiative but it's goals are in close alignment with FMC's opposing submission to the Mokihinui dam proposal and recent committment to work as a member of the Living Rivers Coalition towards protecting other wild rivers from hydro development.

We would be very grateful if you could circulate this message to all your members.

Please use the 'Spread the word' function to make other people aware of the website and petition.

We welcome any feedback; please use the 'Contact Us' link.

    Thanks for your support.

    Dam(n) the Mokihinui?

VUWTC meeting, Tuesday 29 July 7:30pm
Meeting Room 1 and 2, Student Union Building, VUW.

Federated Mountain Clubs executive member Quentin Duthie will present videos and photos from his recent rafting trip down the Mokihinui river in the Buller district, and the campaign of Forest and Bird, FMC and the Greens to save the river from Meridian's dam. There is also a plan for a MTB/tramp track between the Moki and the Buller - find out more. Can we generate renewable energy and reduce climate change emissions without sacrificing wild rivers like the Mokihinui?

Quentin is a member of VUWTC and NZ Alpine Club, a prodigious hut-bagger, Mountain Safety instructor, and passionate tramper. He is also a conservationist involved with Forest and Bird and ECO, and works for the Green Party in parliament.
